Candidate Connection

Rick Walker participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Rick Walker's responses follow below.[5]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Fair funding for public schools.

2) Fair funding for local municipalities.
3) Finding solutions for the heroine epidemic[6][7]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Public schools are our future. We need to make sure that the teachers have the tools necessary to instruct our children to be successful citizens. Charter schools have a place, however they need to be accountable for proving attendance and activity. The majority of these schools have terrible graduation rates. Public schools however have proven to be very successful. If fairly funded, this can continue.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[7]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Rick Walker answered the following:

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I have been in the public workforce all my life. I own two businesses, one in retail flooring and a real estate agent. I work with people every day. I have the ability to negotiate and compromise with people to find the best solution.[7]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To serve the public that elected them. We need to honor the office held and be held accountable to the voters.[7]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
As a worker, and small business owner I have rode the ups and downs of the economy. I have been able to stay in business for more than 30 years by adapting to my surroundings.[7]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I believe redistricting should be an open process and the public should be able to access all the phases of the meetings. All political parties should be represented.[7]

2014

Walker's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[8]

Education

  • Excerpt: "Rick will introduce legislation to ensure our teachers have the resources they need to support our students and meet higher standards."

Jobs and the Economy

  • Excerpt: "Small businesses employ half of all working Americans. As a proud small business owner, Rick believes we should reward Ohio's most reliable job-creators and improve job-training opportunities to revitalize our middle class. Rick wants to eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy, grow our industries, and make Ohio more welcoming to American businesses."

The Environment

  • Excerpt: "Rick Walker believes we have a responsibility to protect our environment for future generations of Ohioans. Measures such as carbon limits and fuel efficiency standards improve public health and reduce greenhouse gases. Investments in clean energy create jobs, reduce emissions, develop domestic energy sources, and improve our state’s energy infrastructure."

Equal Pay

  • Excerpt: "Rick Walker is a strong believer in equal pay for equal work and supports legislation to ban discriminatory pay scales. All Ohioans deserve equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law."

The Second Amendment

  • Excerpt: "Rick Walker believes in defending the Second Amendment and safeguarding the rights of responsible gun owners. Common-sense regulations like background checks protect the public and gun owners alike."
