Candidate Connection

Jason Rees completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Rees' responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My top three priorities are: 1) Appropriate government use of funds already acquired. (i.e. roads we've already paid for). 2) Reduce the size and scope of government. 3) Decimate the size and scope of government.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am personally passionate about individual responsibility and liberty. If we are left to ourselves, we can do great things.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to Rob Paul and Justin Amash because they have been able, as Libertarians, to navigate a notoriously corrupt system.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Freedom by Adam Kokesh. The Law by Bastiat

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

As a statesman, it is most important to remain true to Principle. I wish to represent the people of my District, no more no less.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I do not wish to be an "office holder" other than to represent the people of my community in the legislature.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Again, to remain true to Principle...politics and politicians be dam$&@.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I wish to purchase my immortality with the currency of ideas. Politics will not be my legacy.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I remember the FED destroying our currency for as long as I can remember.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I worked for several years as a gas station attendant.

What happened on your most awkward date?

I had an accident.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Festivus, because this is not relevant to my public service.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Ethics of Liberty by Rothbard, because.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Third Person Omniscient.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My phone, because it connects me to the world.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Mahnahmenah...DooDoodahDooDoo.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Every day...welcome to the world.

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

There's no significant difference, the Senate should be abolished.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Not necessarily. Some experience may help, but power corrupts when?

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

We need to become energy self sufficient.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

One that allows the people the most freedom.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Relationships are important, but Ideals and Principles are importanter.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

I favor free association.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

I would like to be on any committee that fixes our money.

If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?

I am Secretary if the Jackson/Hillsdale Libertarian Party.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

The Buddha.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

I wish to represent the people and obstruct government, not leech for a career.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I myself drive on these roads, where is the money going?!
