A total of 206 counties, scattered mostly throughout the northern midwest and northeast United States, voted for Democrat Barack Obama for president in 2008 and 2012 and then voted for Republican Donald Trump in 2016. These counties are sometimes referred to as swing counties by media and political observers. This article details the demographics of race, ethnicity, income, and education. Demographics of Pivot Counties are compared to national averages as well as averages for the state in which those counties are located.[1]

Pivot Counties demographics
The table below shows the demographics of the entire U.S. population compared with the demographics of all 206 Pivot Counties. Averages for the United States, used in population estimates and the number of veterans, were calculated using 3,156 counties. The numbers in the "Average" column were found by averaging the demographic percentages of each of the 206 Pivot Counties—not by calculating demographics across the populations of those counties. The "# Above U.S." column details the number of Pivot Counties with a higher percentage than the national average. The "% Above U.S." column details the percentage of Pivot Counties that have a higher number or percentage than the national average. This table was compiled by Ballotpedia staff based on data made available via the U.S. Census Bureau website.[2]
