A total of 14 school districts in Delaware and West Virginia will be holding school board elections on May 13, 2014. These races feature 53 candidates competing for 33 seats. Only five of these races are uncontested, and 27 incumbents are looking to retain their seats. While most races in the upcoming elections are not competitive, some West Virginia elections feature many candidates. In Wood County Schools, 10 candidates are competing for just three spots on the school board. Incumbents Jim Fox, Tad M. Wilson and Lawrence Hasbargen are seeking re-election against newcomers Ron Tice, Steve Smith, Ami Shaver, Rene Imler, Jimmy Asbury, Peggy Smith and Ponnie Piggott-Sampson. Board members are elected at-large, but represent different geographical districts. No more than two members elected from any magisterial district may serve on the board during a given term.
Similarly, the school board races in Kanawha County Schools and Raleigh County Schools each feature seven candidates competing for three open positions. Kanawha County Schools is dealing with a controversy involving the use of tap water in district schools following the Freedom Industries chemical spill in January 2014. When the district made the decision to return to using tap water for drinking and cooking in March 2014, some parents were unhappy with the decision and pushed for use of bottled water through the end of the year.[1] Raleigh County Schools named a new superintendent in April 2014 following the resignation of former superintendent, Jim Brown, in March 2014.[2][3]
