David L. Martin
David L. Martin was a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He was appointed to this position on the court on September 29, 1998 to a renewable eight-year term, and was re-appointed in 2006.[1] Martin retired on September 30, 2012.[2]
Early life and education
Judge Martin graduated in 1968 "with distinction" from the University of Rhode Island with a B.A. degree. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating in 1973. He was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1973.[1]
Career
From 1974-1981, Martin was an Assistant Public Defender with the State of Rhode Island Public Defender's Office; in this position, he represented indigents who were charged with criminal offenses. From 1981-1998, Martin worked as an attorney in private practice, with a focus on criminal defense. On September 29, 1998 he was appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island, where he served until September 30, 2012.[2][1]
Judge Martin also served in the United States Army Reserve for 26 years, retiring in September 1996 with the rank of colonel.[1]
