During this time, he also worked for three years as a deputy prosecuting attorney and for seven years as a public defender. Noteworthy cases

Hutaree militia case

Judge Scheer presided in the initial appearances for nine members of the Hutaree militia. On April 2, 2010, Judge Scheer ordered all nine suspects held in jail without bail until the trial began. This comes after a grand jury indictment was returned on March 29, 2010, against the nine suspects on charges of conspiracy and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction. The judge ordered no bail after federal prosecutors successfully argued that the nine suspects were a flight risk and a danger to the community.[4]
