I was born, raised and am still living in the Pilsen neighborhood in the Southwest Side of Chicago. I started my career in public service working in the office of former County Commissioner Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia as his Director of Community Relations. I worked as the Spanish-speaking Director of Communications in the office of Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi. My most recent service was in the office of 25th Ward Alderman, Byron Sigcho Lopez as the Chief of Staff. In these roles, I have had a front row seat in the role of government in the lives of every day families, and seen the opportunities to improve our quality of life and public safety that are available to us if we fight together.

I did not start out with an interest in politics, but my interests were always in the community. As a son of immigrants, I have struggled alongside my neighbors and have fought for solutions to lift our shared burdens. In my early work in government, I saw firsthand how many of the systems upon which our institutions are built do not work for people like me and my neighbors. I decided to pursue an elected office to fight for the systematic change I saw we all need.

  • We need a senator who understands the issues confronting our communities and who has the political courage and independence to challenge the institutions that profit from the burdens that our communities face. We are running a grassroots campaign that ensures that community voices are at its core as it is the community that I will be held accountable to as state senator.
  • In our campaign, we have made it a priority to only take contributions from community members and small businesses in order to remain independent of any special interests of big business, such as Comed or Peoples Gas. We deserve honest, accountable and responsive leadership which cannot be accomplished when special interests are involved.
  • Traditionally, politics in Illinois has made it so a select few are able to successfully run and be elected. Others, are appointed altogether, avoiding the community process that ensures the communities’ needs are heard and their concerns fought for. My run for office is attempting to break the cycle of politics we have grown accustomed to and have accepted as the norm.
Crime and gun violence on the Southwest Side of Chicago continues to be pervasive issue that disproportionally impacts our communities. Investing in our communities to address public safety has not been tackled with the urgency it requires. Investment in our communities comes from more than just financially supporting programs and initiatives. Youth voices need to be uplifted and included in the process, giving them the courage and opportunity to make decisions that impact them.

I am committed to challenge the realtor lobby in Springfield and lift the ban on rent control in our state, allowing tenants to finally have their rent and housing costs stabilized and also allowing small property owners to receive tax relief for providing “naturally occurring” affordable housing in our communities. Our immigrant communities are disproportionately impacted by insecure housing and displacement. With innovative solutions and fighting in Springfield, we can accomplish housing security

The Southwest Side communities experience the hardship of environmental injustice at alarming rates. Our neighborhoods have been subjected to the Hilco disaster, Sims metal management, Mat asphalt and the ubiquitous diesel emissions that make our children have higher rates of asthma, and increasing the rates other illness. I am dedicated to never taking contributions from industries that make profit to pollute our communities and instead fight to attract sustainable green jobs that strengthen our economy
