Elections were held yesterday in two of America's 100 largest cities: Nashville, Tennessee, and Buffalo, New York. Runoff elections in Nashville decided the mayoral race and 14 city council seats. Buffalo held two Democratic city council primaries to determine party nominees for the November general election.
Nashville, Tennessee
On Thursday night, Nashville elected the first female mayor in city history. At-large council member Megan Barry defeated former Metropolitan Nashville School Board chairman David Fox by a margin of nearly 10 percentage points.[1]
The runoff election also brought campaigns for 14 city council seats to an end. Of the five at-large seats, only one went to someone currently serving on the city council; Erica Gilmore of District 19 was the only one to successfully navigate both the general and runoff elections. Four sitting council members lost in the general election, while another four were defeated in the runoff election.[1]
