I’m a Brookline renter, a BU faculty member, a union member, a dad, and a former member of the Brookline Select Board. I’ve seen firsthand that when we lead with courage, are driven by equity, and add seats at the policymaking table for those excluded by traditional power structures, we can deliver truly transformative policy results. But I haven’t seen those values, or that urgency, reflected in our state-level representation. I’m running for State Representative because the people who need it most can’t afford a legislature and a Rep. who fail to take bold action on the big challenges we face, from racial injustice, to the housing and climate crises, to education and economic inequity. I’m fighting to make Brookline, and all of Massachusetts, a place where every person can thrive, and you can read the plans I have to get us there at www.raulforrep.com/policy.
  • For me, policy is personal. Growing up in public housing, I saw that fully-funded public institutions can create safe and stable neighborhoods. That’s why I’ll advocate for substantially increased funding for public housing maintenance and production. As a graduate of Bronx Science, I’m proof that a well-resourced public school unlocks the limitless potential of its students. That’s why I’ll fight for real school desegregation to ensure that all students can access an excellent education. As a renter in Coolidge Corner, I understand the anxiety created by yearly rent hikes. That’s why I’ll champion rent stabilization. These lived experiences mean that I bring a sense of urgency to policymaking that’s been missing from our state legislature.
  • On the Select Board, I saw that transformative progress is possible when we lead with courage, are driven by equity, and add seats at the policymaking table for those excluded by traditional power structures. I’ll bring the same approach to leadership on Beacon Hill.
  • With Democratic supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature, our state should be a nationwide leader on progressive policies. At the very least, we should have adopted the Massachusetts Democratic Party Platform! But our highest-in-the-nation childcare costs, housing crisis, income inequality, and crumbling transportation infrastructure speak for themselves: we’re certainly not the nation-leading state we should and could be. We need more representatives with the courage to challenge the Beacon Hill status quo and deliver on the legislation working families need.
In office, my top priorities will be delivering on true education equity, including early childhood education and care; securing housing as a human right for all of our state’s residents; and reimagining our crisis response system to prioritize mental health and wellbeing. I’ve released policy platforms on racial justice, economic equity, housing, climate, education, transparency and good governance, and reproductive justice, which can be found at https://www.raulforrep.com/policy.
