In the 50 states, there are 99 state legislative chambers altogether, and 86 of the 99 chambers held state legislative elections on November 8, 2016.
In 43 of the 50 state senates, 1,212 seats were up for election. In 43 of the 49 state houses, 4,711 of the country's 5,411 state house seats (for a total of 87.0 percent of seats) were up for election.
Altogether, 5,923 (80.2 percent) of the country's 7,383 state legislative seats were up for election in the presidential election year.[1] Of those nearly 6,000 seats, just 3,446 seats (58.2 percent) featured two major party candidates in the general election.
This page displays the dates for when legislators who won election on November 8, 2016, assumed office. In 34 states, legislators who are elected in November don't assume office until the following year, while in 16 states, legislators assume office before December 31 of the year in which they were elected.
