The current inflationary environment is on everyone's minds. While multi-year economic trends are difficult to control, there are concrete steps that we can take that can mitigate inflationary effects on individuals and their families and speed the recovery from inflation.s

Climate change is reducing the water available in our state, increasing the frequency of severe forest fires and negatively affecting the economic viability of many industries, including agriculture, winter sports, coal, oil and natural gas industries. There are effective strategies that are available to us to address these issues. They will require bi-partisan agreements to be successful.

Social issues such as women's health and gun violence can be devastating on society and solutions devisive. We must come together to addr4ess these issues.
Climate Change and its long term effects on our environment, population and economy must be a priority on personal, local, state, national and global levels. My family is diverse from ethnic, racial and orientation standpoints. I am particularly intersted in promoting equality and equity for all.

Yes. Experience in government teaches the limitations of government actions. It always takes longer than seems reasonable to accomplish things. Compromise is almost always necessary. Few get everything they want on the first try. Persistence and patience are necessary qualities.

General election race ratings

See also: Race rating definitions and methods

Ballotpedia provides race ratings from four outlets: The Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, Sabato's Crystal Ball, and DDHQ/The Hill. Each race rating indicates if one party is perceived to have an advantage in the race and, if so, the degree of advantage:

  • Safe and Solid ratings indicate that one party has a clear edge and the race is not competitive.
  • Likely ratings indicate that one party has a clear edge, but an upset is possible.
  • Lean ratings indicate that one party has a small edge, but the race is competitive.[5]
  • Toss-up ratings indicate that neither party has an advantage.

Race ratings are informed by a number of factors, including polling, candidate quality, and election result history in the race's district or state.[6][7][8]

Post-filing deadline analysis

The following analysis covers all U.S. House districts up for election in Utah in 2022. Information below was calculated on June 2, 2022, and may differ from information shown in the table above due to candidate replacements and withdrawals after that time.

Thirteen candidates filed to run for Utah’s four U.S. House districts, including four Democrats and nine Republicans. That’s 3.25 candidates per district, less than the 3.75 candidates per district in 2020 and more than the 2.5 in 2018.

This was the first election to take place under new district lines following the 2020 census. Utah was apportioned four districts, the same number it was apportioned after the 2010 census. All four incumbents filed to run for re-election, meaning there were no open seats this year. That was one fewer than in 2020, when there was one open seat.

All four incumbents faced primary challengers, the highest number since at least 2014, the earliest year for which we have data. Utah’s four incumbent congressmen were Republicans, meaning there were four contested Republican primaries this year. There were no contested Democratic primaries. The four contested primaries this year were the most since 2014, when six primaries were contested.

Four candidates, including incumbent Rep. Blake Moore (R), filed to run in the 1st district. That was the most candidates who ran for a seat this year. Republican and Democratic candidates filed to run in all four districts, so no seats were guaranteed to either party this year.

Democratic convention results

Brian Wonnacott won the Democratic nomination on April 26, 2014. He ran unopposed.[14]

Republican convention results

On April 26, 2014, at Utah’s GOP Convention, delegates chose incumbent Jason Chaffetz as the Republican candidate in the 2014 general election. Chaffetz received 838 votes, or 87.17 percent, while Robert Stevens and Mark Hedengren each received 65 votes, or 6.42 percent.[15]

Utah uses a convention-primary system to choose candidates for general elections. At the state nominating convention, delegates cast votes for a candidate on behalf of their district. If a delegate receives 60 percent of the votes, the candidate moves on to the general election; otherwise, the two remaining candidates compete in a primary election.[16] According to The Salt Lake Tribune, “The group Count My Vote, led by former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt and other influential and well-heeled Republicans, launched a petition drive last year to put a measure on the ballot to strip the party conventions of most of their authority, arguing the caucus-convention system is exclusionary and doesn’t represent the average Utahn.”[17]
