Arizona's 19th Legislative District has been home to Leezah Sun, her husband, and son ever since they first moved here from Philadelphia in 2005. It was the best decision she made in her entire life, as Arizona's values and diversity provided a wonderful home in which to raise her son. Ever since, she's personally witnessed the blue wave wash over the Arizona desert. Now, Leezah is running for the Arizona House of Representatives as a Democrat to serve her district-which represents West Phoenix, Avondale, and Tolleson-in an effort to help provide the change we need to make our government work for its people.

Leezah's family first came to the U.S. fleeing China during the Cultural Revolution. As a third generation Asian American immigrant, Leezah understands the daily struggle for immigrant families and the necessity to fight for comprehensive immigration reform. She believes immigrant rights are human rights and will work towards putting an end to unjust immigration policies.

With a career background in the pharmaceutical industry, she knows the ins and outs of healthcare, hospitals, and insurance. She believes in healthcare as a right for Arizonans and will do all that she can to help guarantee access to quality healthcare for Arizona families.
  • Increasing public school budgets will provide a strong foundation for Arizona children and families. Divert money from charter schools and voucher programs to public school budgets.
  • End predatory HOA practices and fees.
  • Dismantle the for-profit prison industry and reduce recidivism.
She is a strong believer in government transparency and accountability, and has vowed to run a clean election to stave off corporate influence and corruption in governance. She believes in access to healthcare and education for all Arizonans, as well as an expansion of mental health resources for veterans and active duty service members. She wants to dismantle the for-profit prison industry and reduce recidivism. She will work hard to put an end to human rights violations at the border. She is ready to fight for representation for immigrants, veterans, the LGBTQ community, the disabled, students, and all families in Arizona.

As a mother of a gifted student, Leezah serves on the finance team for her son's Parent Teacher Organization. She has also spent the previous three years volunteering for the Demand to Learn Campaign with the American Civil Liberties Union, a program which helps ensure student retention and equal opportunities in education. She believes all Arizonans deserve access to a quality education, and that we desperately need to improve our school systems. She wants more accountability in private education funding, and an increase in public school budgets in order to provide a strong foundation for Arizona children and families.

Leezah believes in the strong communities of Arizona. She believes in building on our strong and diverse workforce by providing better opportunities for Arizona families.

2024 Ethics Violations

On November 3, 2023, Democratic leaders in the Arizona House of Representatives filed an ethics complaint against Sun. The complaint cited previously reported allegations that Sun harassed Tolleson city employees and made verbal death threats.[2]

In January of 2024, the Arizona House Ethics Committee held two hearings regarding the November ethics complaint. The Committee also investigated two additional incidents regarding Sun’s behavior; one claim of intimation and disorderly conduct related to Sun’s alleged interference in a court-ordered custody transfer in June of 2023, and one alleged threat made by Sun towards Tolleson Elementary School District superintendent Roger Freeman in December of 2022.[3]

On January 31, 2024, the Arizona House Ethics Committee found that Sun had committed a “pattern of disorderly behavior”, and that Sun was “in violation of Rule 1 of the Arizona House of Representatives."[4][5]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Arizona

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states. To contribute to the list of Arizona scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
