2016

Smith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Term Limits

Some Illinois politicians have been in office for 20, 30 or 40 years. But their failed policies demonstrate to the people that their time in Springfield has not been well spent. Michelle joins the nearly 80 percent of Illinois residents – both Democrats and Republicans – who are demanding term limits on Illinois lawmakers. She will fight to put term limits and other political reforms at the top of the legislative agenda because the people of Illinois deserve to have representation that fights for their interests, not the politically-connected few.

Jobs & Economy

Illinois needs to bring jobs and small businesses back to Illinois. We need to foster economic growth by eliminating job-crushing regulations, stifling administrative burdens and unreasonably high workers’ compensation costs. Michelle knows what small businesses can do when we unleash the creativity of our citizens. We get more jobs, more revenue and better communities. Making Illinois a pro-growth state means we will have more money to put into our schools and social services for our most vulnerable citizens. With commonsense solutions to our state’s toughest problems, Illinois can become a prosperous state once again.

Education

As your state senator, Michelle will always put the children of our district first, just as she has done for the past seven years on the school board. Michelle will vote “no” to any bill that takes your money from our district to bail out Chicago.

Pensions

First, we need to honor the promises that we have made to our state employees. Retiring workers have planned their entire lives around that money and are counting on it to support themselves after they stop working. We need to fully fulfill our current pension obligations. Second, our state must stop making promises it can’t keep. New state workers should move to a defined contribution plan just like the private sector.

Taxes: Property

Property taxes are squeezing the middle class all over Illinois, especially here in Will county. Under the leadership of House Speaker Mike Madigan, the corrupt Chicago political machine has succeeded in making you the No. 1 payer of property taxes in the country. We need a real property-tax freeze that lets Will county residents keep more of what they earn. Giving local governments more control over spending will allow them to cut costs and spend local money where it’s needed most, on schools and infrastructure.[8]
