Biography

Bronson was born in Owosso, MI. He earned a bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 2017. His career experience includes owning a small business that does painting and drywall. He also served on the City Planning Commission in Mount Clemens from 2017 to 2019.

What’s your one big idea for improving public schools?

Every problem our schools face comes down to not having fully-funded schools that give the students of our community the resources they need to enter the workforce or college prepared. We need to use that money to give teachers a competitive and fair salary to help us end the teacher shortage crisis we face here in Michigan. With remote learning quickly becoming the norm, an estimated 1/3 of students don't have access to the internet and/or access to a device that connects to the internet. We need to invest in our internet infrastructure, so these students aren't left behind.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

It will be recovering from the economic collapse started by coronavirus. Coronavirus may have started the collapse but, incompetent leadership and craven politicians will extend and exacerbate the problem. We need leadership that will put people first when crafting legislation that will help us all recover.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

It is absolutely essential to build relationships with your colleagues. Even if you both don't agree on everything, there is value in being able to communicate with the people you work with. When I get elected I will make sure to build a relationship with everyone I work with. Only then can you find a pathway you can both work on and actually get something done for this state.

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I've been a painter and drywaller here in Macomb County for the last 10 years and have owned my own business for the last 8 years. I started my business while working on my degree in Biochemistry at Wayne State University. I'm also the Director of the American Organization for Scientific Causes, a nonprofit I started on my own and aims to get high school students the resources they need to enter STEM programs in college. I was appointed to the City Planning Commission in Mount Clemens in 12/2017 and held that position until I moved to Harrison Township on 8/2019. I'm also currently the Fundraising Chair for the 10th Congressional District Democratic Committee.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

• I believe in higher minimum wages and stronger unions so workers in Michigan can get the livable wages we deserve.
• I believe in the value of education. Having better educated students will set them up for success, therefore creating better jobs and better companies being drawn into Michigan.
• I believe in a healthier environment. We need to fix our water infrastructure so we in Michigan can have clean drinking water and a clean environment.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I'm very interested in the tax code and how states generate revenue. I would like to change how we do that by reforming the tax code. I would start with increasing minimum wage. If we can do that then we can boost consumerism here and that will then increase sales tax receipts across the state. Also, when minimum wage is increased then less people are dependent on government programs and that saves the state a lot of money to spend on infrastructure. Finally, we need to switch from a flat tax rate system to a progressive tax rate system that would increase taxes on large corporations and wealthy families, while also giving small businesses and low-income families a tax break. With all of these combined we could have the money to increase infrastructure and educational investments.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

The book Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson is a book I draw inspiration from. It details how extractive and incompetent governments put a strain on the people they are supposed to govern. We need to build a government that is inclusive and distributes the resources of government equitably. If we can do that, we can build institutions that will last and supports people and businesses.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I'm a natural-born leader, an excellent manager of people, and a thorough researcher. I will always enact policies that will benefit the most people and not just a select few in society.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My very first job was staining deck boards for a contractor when I was 14. It got me started on my long career in contracting and now I have a successful painting and drywall business. I kept this job until I moved away for college so I worked it for 5 years as a teenager.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Plutarch's Fall of the Roman Republic. I'm an adept of history and I love studying the history of republics like Rome and France's First Republic. This is an interesting account of the personalities that led to the formation of the Roman Empire and I would recommend it to anyone.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

We are implementing an independent citizens redistricting commission in Michigan for the 2022 cycle. It is a commission that aims at being as non-partisan as possible when making the political districts in Michigan. I think this is the best way to redistrict so that citizens are in charge of deciding maps instead of politicians that have something to gain from making lopsided maps.
