Campaign themes
2014
Winters' campaign website highlighted the following issues:[3]
- Progressive Income Tax
- Excerpt: "I strongly support the Fair Tax proposal by the coalition known as A Better Illinois. We need to create a fair tax system with lower rates for people with lower incomes and higher rates for higher incomes. We can ease the burdens on middle class and working families as well as small businesses by closing corporate tax loopholes and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share."
- Raise the Minimum Wage
- Excerpt: "I support proposals by the community, parent, faith, and labor groups as well as elected officials for the Illinois General Assembly to raise the minimum wage in Illinois."
- Our Schools and Our Future
- Excerpt: "Our schools have challenges, mostly because of the income inequalities rampant in our society. Any education reform must be in the public interest—on behalf of public schools and the children who attend them—rather than private interests, who seem to be furthering an agenda that experiments on children of color with certain “reforms”, but would never advocate for these changes their own kids. Rather, we need to go back to basics and educate the whole child by investing to ensure that all schools have up to date curriculum and resources in science, technology, engineering and math as well as the humanities, literature, history and the arts in every school. CPS students also need more time on task and less focused on standardized tests. High School students need more mentoring and support, as well as access to wrap around social services. I will go to Springfield to ensure funding for this is my #1 priority."
- Chicago Needs an Elected Representative School Board
- Excerpt: "I support the proposal presented by community, parent, faith, and labor groups for the Illinois General Assembly reforming the Illinois School Code to create an elected representative school board in Chicago."
- School Funding
- Excerpt: "Illinois is at the bottom of the nation for funding its public education system, and CPS desperately needs additional revenue to fund its school system. We need to return unused TIF money to CPS and the other taxing bodies. We also need to end corporate tax subsidies and loopholes so that these groups pay their fair share into our state, as well as the Fair Tax proposal described above. I will champion these efforts in Springfield."
