I am a father, a labor activist, a social worker, and a longtime Democratic activist. I currently serve on the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee. I am former AFSCME member and steelworker with strong ties to organized labor. When elected to Iowa State House District 36, I will make history as the first Latino Democrat in the Iowa Assembly.
I've been involved in Iowa politics for 12 years. For too long, I've seen Democratic leaders fail to address the reasons why we lose year after year. The IDP is beholden to big money and not beholden to its voters. People don't know what Democrats stand for anymore, and I intend to change that. I believe that when Democrats fight for workers, they win. When they are beholden to money, they lose. I am passionate about worker's rights, organized labor, addressing water quality issues, and fighting for social and economic justice. I worked on the factory floor for years, and have seen first-hand the struggles of worker's to provide for their families and live a life of dignity. I want to be a champion for people of all walks of life in the Iowa legislature. Lastly, I want to change the paradigm of the Democratic party to see a return to FDR-style politics where the working class comes first. "We all do better when we all do better" - PW.
In real life, John Adams. He wasn't the most charismatic leader but he believed in his voice and was stubborn in his beliefs. Stubborn because he was often right.

In fiction, Don Quixote De La Mancha. He lived for getting into "good trouble."
Empathy, ability for critical thought, humility and a willingness to know you may be wrong in a position and not afraid to admit it.
After my political journey has reached its end, I hope people will say that Gabe was able to understand how Democrats have lost power in the state of Iowa. I hope they will say he built a coalition of elected officials, labor organizations and activists and together they were able to change the tide of republicans holding power in the state of Iowa. Together they refocused a meandering losing democratic message into a message that resonated with all the people of Iowa. Together they helped gain control of the house, senate, and Governorship resulting in an elected body that believed what they said and acted on those beliefs through policies for the Iowan people.
JRR Tolkien’s, the Lord of the Rings. As a classroom student I found refuge in the school library. The library provided an escapte from bullies, boredom, and life worries. I remember a 5th grade teacher reading an excerpt of "The Hobbit." This reading led me to the world of middle earth, and I devoured it and the trilogy, "the lord of the rings," as quickly as I could.

The story of a group of hodge podge individuals going on a long journey undertaking insurmountable odds, getting separated, and the smallest most unlikely heroes being the final pair to succeed in the quest was a tale that gives every person hope that what lies in one’s heart is the difference between success and failure, not size, strength or treasure. It's an underdog story and we all love rooting for underdogs.
Wolverine, not because he's a superhero but because one of his powers makes him impervious to debt brought on by healthcare while living in America. Yes I understand he's from Canada.
My four and a half year old son and I are both lovers of music, currently he has been on an Elton Jon streak and his song "I'm still standing" is stuck in my head as he's been playing it over and over again on YouTube.
I believe that the two sides should resemble a salsa dancing couple. When the music starts and if both dancers know 1 leads and the other follows they can put on a beautiful exhibition of dance for all watching. If both try and lead on the dance floor, a short dance and perhaps a few broken ankles are the end result.
Water quality

Erosion of Labor rights
Quality and funding of public education

Climate change and the effects it has on farming
For democrats the drawbacks have proven they don't know what to do with power when they get it. Reference the 2007-2008 veto by Democrat governor Chet Culver. Dems have been losing ever since.

For republicans when they get all the keys to all the cars, they say government is the problem, then through self fulfilling prophecy go on to prove it with draconian power.
I believe the most beneficial requirement for a state legislator is the ability to critically think.
Politics at its most basic is about people and the relationships you build with the public. In order for someone to better understand where you are coming from it always helps if they understand you as a person. Your motivations, dreams and wants, this foundation of an individual will be your business card for others. If fellow legislators have an understanding of where you are coming from you have a better chance at forming bonds that will lead to policy.
Iowa is the gold standard. Nonpartisan redistricting.
Every day I go knocking on doors I get to hear a personal story from a constituent who is just longing to be heard. The stories are too many to tell but they all move my soul to keep knocking doors and work for the chance to represent them.
George Carlin is top on my list of favorite comedians. Most of his jokes aren't fit for public consumption sadly.
I believe that compromise should be handled in the legislature like it is handled through collective bargaining. If both parties come to the table in good faith and are willing to come to an agreement that neither side loves, that is compromise. Too often in politics the other side does not come to the table in good faith and that’s when we have to strike.
