Incumbents fare well in low-turnout Delaware and West Virginia school board races

School board elections across Delaware and West Virginia resulted in most incumbents retaining their positions. A total of 23 incumbents won re-election to their respective seats across the two states, as well as 10 newcomers winning seats. In Delaware, incumbents swept all six open board positions. Only 1,699 citizens cast ballots in the five Delaware districts, which educated a combined total of 61,999 students during the 2011-2012 school year. That's a ratio of more than 36 students per voter.
In West Virginia, 17 incumbents retained their seats across nine school districts. Harrison County Schools is the only district to see complete turnover, with newcomers Michael Daugherty, Kristin Messenger and Frank Devono Jr. defeating incumbents David M. Sturm and Allen Gorrell.[1] Wood County Schools will have some new faces on the board, as well. Incumbent Lawrence Hasbargen, as well as newcomers Jimmy Asbury and Peggy Smith, beat out incumbents Jim Fox and Tad M. Wilson and challengers Ron Tice, Steve Smith, Ami Shaver, Rene Imler and Ponnie Piggott-Sampson.[2]
