Candidate Connection

Kenneth Fountain completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Fountain's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Serving the Jackson County School Board for the past 24 years, with 20 of those years being the Board Chairman, education is a top priority for me. If elected, I will continue to work to see that the children of Mississippi get a solid educational foundation to enable them to excel in life. I also want to work to ensure that government does not impede on our free market capitalism which will keep the tax rate low which in turn will keep Mississippians employed. Additionally, a priority for me is protecting the constitutional rights of US citizens and not allowing the congress to interfere with them.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

As I have already stated, I have been on the Board of Education in Jackson County for the past 24 years. Therefore, of course, my passion is about education and making sure that the state of Mississippi continues to fund MAEP, continue to develop ways to increase teacher's salaries that are directly related to Student performance.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I have to say that the person I have looked up to the most is my father. Although he is now deceased, he taught me how to exhibit leadership skills and how important it is to listen to others for their point of view, even though we may not agree on the topics.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Trust and Honesty are without question the most important characteristics for everyone to live by. For those wanting to hold a public office, other principles would be leading by behavior, attitude and actions and influencing others by setting honorable examples.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

As the chairman of a school board that oversees 14 schools in the district, I have had a lot of experience in exhibiting qualities such as leadership skills, communicating skills, and facing obstacles with confidence and determination towards success, especially after Hurricane Katrina.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To represent the citizens of my district in a professional and respectful manor, to listen to their concerns and interests and to keep my constituents updated on matters that will affect them directly during the session.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would like my legacy to be that by serving the people of District 114 as their Representative, I made a difference in their lives for the good.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first historical event that I can remember is the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963. I was 9 years old and I remember coming home from school and finding my mother crying because the president had been assassinated.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was a bag boy at Delchamps grocery store for about 2 years at the age of 15.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

My favorite holiday is Christmas because everyone's spirits seem to be high and I love Christmas songs and family get togethers.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

I have a charcoal drawing of my father that my son did for me. I treasure it.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Yes

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Education, Health Care and infrastructure.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Communication with the governor is a must.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

I believe in order to be successful you need colleagues to be supportive of your efforts. Nothing can be accomplished by one individual by themselves.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Redistricting should be completed in accordance to MS Federal Laws. However, many times the boundaries are established to benefit congressional representatives vs the constituents of a community.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

I would like to be part of Educational, Ports/Harbors/Airports, resources, Wildlife and Fisheries and Appropriations.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

No
