Michele Edwards was a 2017 Democratic candidate for District 20 of the Virginia House of Delegates.

Biography

Edwards received bachelor's degrees in special education and French. Her professional experience includes working as a teacher.[1]

Healthcare:
Expanding Medicaid in Virginia is a common-sense solution, and truthfully it is the moral thing to do. Affordable healthcare should not be a partisan issue and as Delegate, Michele will work with her fellow legislators across party lines to ensure that Medicaid expansion is a top legislative priority. Michele believes no hard working Virginian should go without affordable health care and the good news is a majority of Virginians agree.

Education:
Public school education is one of Michele's top priorities. As a public-school parent and former teacher, Michele knows there are certain things that need to be done to ensure that every child receives a quality education that meets learning needs. Michele will work diligently for full funding of public education and support:

  • Reduced class sizes, especially in the lower grades
  • Providing more state funds for remediation to improve student achievement both during and after the school day
  • Increased opportunities for participation in Pre-K and Head Start programs

Environment:
Michele is committed to curbing the effects of climate change, protecting Virginia's natural resources, and ensuring the quality of our air, water, and land for future generations. Michele is against the Atlantic Cost Pipeline.

Non-Partisan Redistricting:
Michele believes that a fair redistricting process is essential to maintaining the health of American's democracy. Michele supports the creation of a non-partisan redistricting committee that will comply with the requirements set forth by the Virginia Constitution and Voting Rights Act.

The practice of “Gerrymandering” or creating unfair, uncompetitive state and federal legislative districts. Gerrymandering has been used by both political parties and is a practice that deprives Virginia citizens a voice in our elections. Michele wants to ensure that every Virginian has their voice heard, and to do so we must instate a non-partisan redistricting process before the 2021 census.

Economic Development:
We must prepare constituents for the 21st-century economy. This means laying the groundwork for technological workforce development. When elected Michele will introduce legislation and support grants at the public school and community college level that promote S.T.E.A.M. education focusing on low-income and rural schools.

General election

Elections for the Virginia House of Delegates took place in 2017. All 100 house seats were up for election. The general election took place on November 7, 2017. A primary election took place on June 13, 2017. The filing deadline for primary election candidates was March 30, 2017. The filing deadline for non-party candidates and candidates nominated by methods other than a primary was June 13, 2017.[4] Incumbent Richard Bell (R) defeated Michele Edwards (D) and Will Hammer (Libertarian) in the Virginia House of Delegates District 20 general election.[5]
