Candidate Connection

Tracy Blackmon completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Blackmon's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Decreasing the level of poverty impacting District 10. 2. Increasing opporotunities for better pay, jobs, and educational opportunities. 3. Increasing the level of mental health and addiction treatment options and services.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I have worked in the mental and addiction field for over 10 years. I have seen first hand the impact of addiction on individuals and families in my district. I want to be an advocate to increase treatment options and treatment availability for people struggling with mental health and addiction.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Eleanor Roosevelt is one of the individuals that I admire for not only her immense intelligence but her boundless compassion and courage to work for others and the betterment of the world.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

A recent book that has influenced my political perceptions and the human condition is: "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

It is vital for a leader to have a high level of integrity, ability to learn, to be able to think outside of just the immediate moment and think about the future impact of their actions. The philosophy of a politician should be based on making things better for others and to uphold the values of our democracy and not just value themselves or power.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I focus on the impact of my actions on others and hold myself to a high standard of not only professional ethics but personal ethics. To always learn and ask the questions to understand as much as I can. I am a strong advocate for change and believe that facts are more important in making a decision than opinion.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To fight for the betterment of District 10, to increase opportunities for others in the District, and to listen to the needs of the individuals living in District 10.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would like to leave a legacy of prosperity for others, integrity, and a cleaner environment.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first major event that I remember is the beginning of the AIDS Epidemic and the loss of so many lives. It helped me learn the importance of advocacy, holding our government accountable for their choices, and to fight discrimination.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was working at Holloman AFB's "Chicken Shack," which was located in the BX. I worked there for about one year. I learned the meaning of hard work and how important it is to treat others with respect no matter the work they do.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

My favorite holiday is Halloween and in a close second is Thanksgiving.

What is your favorite book? Why?

One of my favorite books from my childhood is "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." It became one of those books that I read multiple times and helped me learn the importance of courage and family.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Wonder Woman for her integrity, strength, and courage.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

My favorite thing in my home is my family and my pets. I also love my comfy chair.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

I believe some of the biggest challenges for NC will be climate change, poverty, and substance use issues.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

The ideal relationship between the Governor and the State Legislator's should be one of challenging each other to make sure all ideas are heard and then coming together to put forth the best legislation for the betterment of NC.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Yes I do. I believe that if legislators can know each other, even those with different beliefs can come together to develop better, more well rounded policies.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

I would favor an independent and bi-partisan redistricting panel. A panel made up of equal persons who are republican, democrat, and an independent to break any potential tie.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

The stories that I hear focus on the lack of resources to support women, men and families struggling with mental health or substance use issues. The cycle of poverty and our criminalization of the poor. Single mothers who are having to work two and three jobs just to try and survive. These are the individuals who have inspired me to try and run for office.

What is your political philosophy?

I chose to run for office to fight for equal pay, access to opportunities for better pay, to decease the level of poverty in District 10, better medical care, and better education for North Carolinians.
