As a proven leader, it is important to possess the skill of listening to first understand before being understood. As an educator, working with varying personalities and differing points of view, provides me with the unique ability to create consensus based on shared experiences. It is important to know how to work with people who may have different viewpoints and beliefs for the purpose of accomplishing a set goal.
  • My professional experience in education and my personal life experiences has provided a first hand account on how lawmakers that are detached from the impact on the lives of their constituents, prompted me to run. Education will ALWAYS be my top priority. It is imperative that the General Assembly comply with legal ruling to fully fund Leandro. The ruling in 1994 by the N.C. Supreme Court recognized the state constitutional right for every student to have access to a “sound basic education, 30 years later the Republican led General Assembly still refuses to fund. In addition to fully funding Leandro, I will continue to fight for wage increases for certified and classified employees.
  • I am also blessed to still have my mother at the age of 89. She is in good health; however, so many of her friends are not as fortunate. They struggle with rising prescription cost, massive healthcare debt, limited access to affordable housing and lack of general advocacy for elder care, which is another reason I want to move from grassroots organizing and advocacy to lawmaking.
  • Workforce training and development combined with affordable housing is essential to building strong communities. As the state continues to recruit businesses that can strengthen our economy, we want to retain these companies by offering a strong workforce and housing availability.
Taxes on corporations and businesses are necessary to keep the state reserves strong. If majority party continues to fight to take the corporate tax rate to zero, our state will not be able to continue to fund itself. Personal income tax will not generate enough revenue to keep the reserves strong. Under Governor Hunt, the state was the strongest not because the tax rate was zero but because we had strong schools; K-12, community colleges and 4-year institutions. Additionally, there was the introduction of Pre-K and SmartStart. Corporations that do business in the state should pay their share ensuring that we have a strong economy, well-funded schools and access to universal Pre-K, which will contribute to economic success.
Many people are not clear on the role and responsibilities of the state legislatures. It is important to inform the constituents through various forms of communication and often this failure to understand how Raleigh operates, often times creates a false narrative about the effectiveness of the Representative. As promised in during my first term, there has been an emphasis on communication and transparency in reporting as well as working with the "entire" Forsyth County delegation to build trust and respect as we move forward in bringing resources to the county. I have done this by producing a bi-monthly newsletter, convening townhalls around the district and topic specific round-table discussions. As an advocate and champion, my focus will continue to be on strengthening public education through stronger investment, fighting for the reproductive rights and healthcare for women, affordable housing and criminal justice reform.

Having served two terms, I have learned that a willingness to coalition build as well as knowing how to work with people who may have different viewpoints and beliefs for the purpose of accomplishing a set goal is critical. Equally important is understanding what the roles and responsibility of this office entails. Even though as an educator, I have worked in elementary, middle and high schools that have been in the suburbs, alternative settings, as well as highly impacted environments, my experience in education has made me uniquely qualified to transition into the political arena to effect change. My commitment to always being prepared and researching the issues before voting is necessary to being an effective elected leader.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in North Carolina

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
