Rhonda Martin grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa. Her parents were both teachers who then became farmers. Their commitment to land stewardship practices was formative to her life and career. Rhonda attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she studied landscape architecture. She has been a registered landscape architect for more than 33 years. For the last thirteen years, Rhonda has worked at Facilities, Planning and Management at Iowa State University as both a project manager and as a campus landscape architect.

Rhonda has been happily married for over 27 years and has two grown children. She and her family have lived in Johnston Iowa for more than 21 years. Rhonda is a past president of her neighborhood association, was member of a neighborhood improvement grant committee and the city's Tree Board.

In 2017, Martin was elected to the Johnston City Council. As a council member, Rhonda has prioritized expanding the city's trails and sidewalks, respecting neighborhood scale, and protecting the city's natural resources. Rhonda's city council position also involves serving on a number of boards and committees with a concentration on the environment and natural resources.

  • All Iowans deserve access to affordable healthcare. The failure of the privatized Medicaid system must be fixed.
  • Iowa must act now to address the climate crisis. We must work to create a sustainable, healthy environment.
  • Iowa must restore its commitment to strong public schools to ensure our future social and economic prosperity.
Iowa prospers when our priorities are balanced. Right now, Iowa is out of balance. To get back in balance, we need to protect our future by addressing climate change. Extreme climate events destroy communities and businesses. Waiting to respond to extreme weather events is not a solution. There are pragmatic steps we can take to slow and reverse climate change. We also need to repair a broken Medicaid system so that our most vulnerable Iowans can receive the healthcare they need and medical providers receive reimbursements necessary to provide care. And we need to fund public education so all children have access to high quality education from pre-school to technical school or college. Iowa's economy flourishes with a healthy, educated workforce. I am also committed to restoring workers', womens' and civil rights that have been restricted or taken away in recent years.

In addition to policy issues, we need to take care of our system of government. First, we need to ensure that every voter is able to vote safely and that every vote is counted. Our vote by mail system must be strengthened and voter suppression efforts must be ended. Second, Iowans must have access to the political process so they can learn and understand the policies being made that effect their lives every day. The legislative process should be open, deliberative, and allow adequate time for public input.

I look forward to working to build a stronger Iowa with and for all Iowans.
