Races for lieutenant governor are often overshadowed by gubernatorial and federal races, but a significant portion of these seats welcomed new officeholders after the general election on November 4, 2014. Eight incumbents (28.6 percent of total seats) declined to run for re-election or lost in primary elections in 2014, while two lieutenant governors did not seek re-election due to term limits. Voters in Arkansas, Massachusetts and Nebraska selected candidates to fill vacant lieutenant governor seats. Republicans held 18 of 30 (60 percent) lieutenant governor seats up for election in 2014.
Party breakdown
Five lieutenant gubernatorial offices changed parties on November 4, 2014, as Republicans had a net gain of two seats. Republicans gained Illinois, Maryland and South Carolina while Democrats won Pennsylvania. Byron Mallott won the lieutenant governor's office in Alaska as part of an independent ticket, though he was originally the Democratic gubernatorial candidate.[1]
