I’m a native Angeleno and the son of Central American refugees. My mother, a janitor for over 35 years and a founding member of the Janitors’ union, made sure that I went to school, got a good job and learned to stand up for family and community. A lifelong renter, I attended public schools and worked multiple jobs to pay for college. I will never forget where he came from and will fight hard in Sacramento for you and your family. I’m an environmental and budgetary policy expert who has written, implemented and funded laws to raise the minimum wage, create jobs & protect tenants. Over the past decade, I have also carried out legislation for 100% carbon-free energy, improved infrastructure, and expanding affordable housing. My experience is invaluable; now more than ever, our communities need a strong, focused representative who can lead on day one.
  • CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP - Build on the practical solutions that we have already implemented in Los Angeles, such as making solar options cheaper and more accessible, and eliminating plastic pollution and Styrofoam™. We need better leadership from Sacramento to protect open space, eliminate pollutants, and incentivize sustainable solutions for the climate crisis.
  • AFFORDABLE HOUSING & TRANSPORTATION - Protect renters and existing affordable housing, and focus on neighborhoods. I will also work to increase access to safe, effective public transit and fight for improvements to traffic and pedestrian safety.
  • EDUCATION & ECONOMIC SECURITY - Work to increase funding for K-12 public schools, community colleges and the CSU and UC systems. I will focus on access to vocational training and pathways to good-paying union jobs, including in the new green economy.
The areas of public policy I am most passionate about are Climate, Environment, Energy, Education, Job Creation and Economic Opportunity for all.
I look up to my mom for the strength and determination she had to raise me and move us ahead.
Transparency, tenacity, honesty, intelligence, compassion and focus are some traits that come to mind. I also believe that a public servant must never forget the community they serve, or the community they came from.
In this office, the main roles are to introduce legislation, adopt a budget, and provide oversight via committee and other legislative work. Further, I believe in being present with communities and with residents, I plan on being very busy in the district each and every week.
I was six years old when my mother took me to a rally for Janitors in Century City. The year was 1990 and the Janitors – mostly immigrant women and men – were peacefully protesting for better wages and to improve their working conditions. The Janitors were met with force by the LAPD; the police beat so many people that over 60 were hospitalized, including two pregnant women - one who would later miscarry. This event was the beginning of the Justice for Janitors movement and led to over 150,000 people winning a union for themselves.

I grew up going to protests and rallies. I was raised on the idea that working people need to organize and stand up for themselves because that is the only way for everyone to get what they deserve.

That memory and the other events I joined with my mother formed the basis of my political worldview and it is why I am running for office. To make a better world for all of us.
My first job was to elect Al Gore to the presidency in 2000. I was a student worker and couldn’t vote, but did make Spanish language phone calls for the Vice President.
Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. I’ve always been interested and have loved the stars and planets. It’s a good and quick read for anyone to pick up.
I’ve Been Everywhere, by Johnny Cash
Absolutely, other candidates have worked under public officials, but I am the only candidate in the race that has the level of expertise and leadership that comes from directly working on legislation for over 13 years.

My experience and background will allow me to focus on the issues that matter to the people of the district.
