Smith ran in the 2012 election for Illinois State Senate District 49. Smith lost in the Republican primary on March 20, 2012. He faced Gary Fitzgerald, Garrett Peck and Anthony Giles. Incumbent William "Sam" McCann did not run for re-election in District 49; instead, he ran in District 50. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2][3]
