I was born in Suffolk and I am happy to still be a Suffolk resident at the age of 51. I am running as an independent because I believe every citizen in our district deserves to have equal representation. Without a party agenda, I will be free to fairly evaluate the issues and determine what is best for our community; and, I will have the freedom to listen to all of our citizens without losing the $upport of party leadership. I believe whomever is elected Governor will be happy to have a representative in our seat who may vote with him 50% of the time instead of a representative who might vote against him 100% of the time.....And I think our citizens feel that way as well.
- Thinking independently on behalf of our community, and being able to put our collective needs above party loyalty.
- Campaign finance reform. No candidate or PAC should be allowed to accept donations from someone who is not eligible to vote for the candidate.
- I will not promise to fix education, healthcare, public safety, the economy, etc... The House of Delegates is a representative role with very specific duties. I plan to stay in my lane and perform the actual job.
Transportation and eminent domain. With a new interstate (I-87) coming from ou South in the next 10 years, we should experience a large shift in our local transportation needs. Since the purpose of the new interstate is to provide Raleigh/Durham with a direct connection to our ports, it will likely also reduce traffic (especially trucking) from 58 and 460 heading to West to I-95. This shift may add large amounts of freight traffic from our own manufacturing and distribution(Planters, Target, Ace, etc...) to rt.13 and rt. 32 as the trucks try to intersect the new interstate just South of the Dismal Swamp and take advantage of a much shorter route South. Likewise, with the new Amazon facilities(and probably more like them) taking advantage of the proximity to the ports, the traffic patterns in the Northeast parts of Suffolk will also experience more strain. The connectors and flyovers that will be needed in these two areas, much like the 58/13 connector that bypasses Turlington road, will bring about eminent domain. Before this happens, I would like to address the fairness issues associated with this practice. First, the state or federal government should never be allowed to determine the "fair price" required to seize an individual's property. Second, The legislature should develop a formula to offer more attractive ways to negotiate with the land owner such as land leases, future interest revenues tied to the project's bonds, or future revenues indexed to inflation.
Honesty, fairness, and courage to do the right thing. It is not leadership. The citizens of our community do not need to be lead anywhere, the need to be represented so their voice is heard DURING the legislative process.
First, to do no harm to those I am elected to represent. Second, to not unfairly support or benefit any one group or individual above the common good. Third, to report back to the constituents and make sure they are informed about what is happening in Richmond.
I would like to show that an independent candidate can win office in our state, and inspire others to do the same. There are 6 independents running for the house of delegates this election. If just three of these candidates won it would completely change the quality of legislation that is passed. Without the ability for straight party line votes, and knowing they can pass anything they want, our legislators would actually have to write good bills
The most significant one was the attempted assassination of President Reagan. It happened on my birthday, March 30, 1981.
I worked at a veterinary clinic for 2-1/2 years. From the second half of my sophomore year in high school until I graduated.
Economic facts and fallacies by Dr. Thomas Sowell
Aside from the budget, ALL legislation should originate and be passed in the house and senate without interference from the Governor. The Governor should be an umpire in the process and, in addition to executive duties, should use his veto power to be the FINAL hurdle to protect our citizens from bad legislation.
I am not sure about the benefits and drawbacks of a unicameral legislature, in Virginia we have a bicameral legislature.
I believe, depending on the candidates intentions, previous experience could be helpful. If they are choosing political office as a career choice, previous experience could help them climb further up the ladder. I am running for an office that pays $17,000.00/yr, it is not a career choice or occupation. And, since I can find no evidence of an independent representative in either chamber over the past 20 years, I am choosing to blaze a new path that would probably not benefit from previous experience.
I believe relationships with other legislators could be beneficial as long as they are not relied upon. While I'm ultimately more interested in representing the people of this district, I do believe a friendly work environment is more productive.
I believe the committee system that was passed last year is the best process so far.

I would most like to emulate our former delegate, Chris Jones.
I am not interested in other offices.
The legislature should grant the use of emergency powers, the Governor should oversee the use of emergency powers.
Yes, I believe it is necessary, and it is the ingredient that is missing currently in our state government.
