James McKay (Democratic Party) was an at-large member of the Louisiana 4th Circuit Court of Appeal. He assumed office in 1998. He left office on January 3, 2022.

McKay retired on January 3, 2022.[1]

Education

Judge McKay graduated in 1969 from the University of Southwestern Louisiana Lafayette, and earned his J.D. from Loyola University School of Law in 1974.[2]

Career

Before he was elected to the Fourth Circuit Court on March 7, 1998, McKay served from 1982 to 1998 on the Criminal District Court bench handling major felonies in Orleans Parish (41st Judicial District). In 1996, Judge McKay was elected to the Board of Governors of the American Judges Association, a position he held as of this writing. After being assistant district attorney, Orleans Parish from 1974 to 1978, he became chief prosecutor of the Criminal Division for the Metropolitan Office of the State Attorney General's office from 1978 to 1982. McKay was an adult probation and parole officer from 1971 to 1974.[2][3]

As of this writing, he was a member of the American Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Fourth and Fifth Circuit District Judges Association, and the American Judges Association.[2]
