My name is Justin Stofferahn; I am a father, husband, and public servant. I live in White Bear Township with my wife Marissa and our two young children, Freddy and Verity. I am running to be the next State Senator from District 38 because I believe state government can help create opportunity for every family.

My parents fought to give me the opportunities I needed to succeed. With a little bit of savings from them, a Pell grant and some state assistance, and plenty of student loans, I graduated from college with a degree in political science and a drive to shape public policy. This drive took me to the Humphrey School of Public Affairs where I graduated with a master's degree in public policy.

I currently work for the BlueGreen Alliance working to develop federal policies that create more sustainable infrastructure and create good American jobs.

Prior to this work, I spent most of my career around the Capitol working to level the playing field for Minnesotans. At the Minnesota Department of Revenue, I worked to close corporate loopholes and create a simpler, fairer tax code. Working on behalf of communities across Greater Minnesota, I helped secure investments in infrastructure, transportation and public safety.

Marissa and I chose White Bear Lake as the place to raise our family because this community fights for each other. As your Senator, I will fight for strong families, vibrant small businesses, and world-class schools for all the communities in SD 38.
  • I will work to prioritize funding for our local schools, including increasing equalization aid so that districts with lower tax base such as Centennial do not have to saddle residents with high property taxes. We must also do more to make sure we are investing in early childhood education, which economic research has shown is one of our most effective economic development investments. It is also time that we work to lower the costs of higher education from our two-year community colleges to four-year univerisities so we don't saddle future generations with massive debts.
  • I come from a family of entrepreneurs and have spent time working with independent business owners to advocate for policy reforms at the Capitol. In the Senate, I will work to increase small business owners access to capital, expand the availability of technical assistance for small companies, create new investments in innovation, reduce barriers to entry such as restrictive non-compete clauses, and ensure Main Street businesses can offer the benefits necessary to attract top talent.
  • Our broken healthcare system eats up over $47 billion of Minnesotan's money every year on doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospital stays and more. In order to expand coverage, reduce costs, and protect vulnerable Minnesotans I will work to: Allow all residents to purchase into the MinnesotaCare program, reign in the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs, and protect the state's Medicaid program from unnecessary cuts.
Minnesota has a long tradition of prioritizing good government, but the Center for Public Integrity gave Minnesota a D- in its 2015 State Integrity rankings. The way the 2019 legislative session ended with deals being made in closed-door meetings provided further evidence that Minnesota can do more to live up to its reputation of transparent and ethical governance.

How we conduct our campaigns is a big piece of this, which is why I have pledged not to accept any campaign contributions from corporate PACs or lobbyists. Leading by example is not enough though. In the Senate I will pursue policies that strengthen our system of public campaign financing to further root out special interest influence in our elections. Minnesota should also adopt an independent redistricting commission, because voters deserve to choose their politicians, not the other way around.
