Two of the seven seats on the Mesquite Independent School District board of trustees were up for by-district general election on May 7, 2016. Place 1 incumbent Archimedes Faulkner was the sole candidate to file for re-election to the seat. Place 2 incumbent Cary Tanamachi opted not to seek re-election, allowing newcomer Eddie Rose to run unopposed for the seat. The district canceled the election due to a lack of opposition.[1]

The Mesquite Independent Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected by district to four-year terms. While members are elected to specific places on the ballot, they serve at large. Seats are up for election on a staggered basis every even-numbered year in May. The general election for Place 1 and 2 was held on May 7, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[2]
