Incumbent Shri Thanedar (D) defeated Mary Waters (D) and Shakira Lynn Hawkins (D) in the Democratic primary for Michigan's 13th Congressional District on August 6, 2024. Click here for detailed results.

Thanedar received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Karnataka University, a master's degree in chemistry from Bombay University, and an MBA from Fontbonne University. Thanedar worked in the pharmaceutical industry. Thanedar served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2021-2023.[1] Thanedar said he supported policies that expand abortion access, ensure voting rights for all citizens, and improve racial and economic equity.[2] Nine members of the U.S. House and the Congressional Progressive Caucus endorsed Thanedar.[3]

Frmr. Michigan State Sen. Adam Hollier (D) also filed to run in the Democratic primary, but was disqualified from the ballot because he did not submit enough valid voter signatures before the filing deadline. Hollier said, "I am extremely disappointed with the news from the Wayne County Clerk following her thorough and professional review of our petitions — not for myself, but for the voters across the 13th District who deserve a real choice in who their next Congressperson will be. While I put my trust in someone who let us down in the collection of signatures, ultimately the leadership of the campaign falls on me and I must hold myself to a higher standard."[4]

Submitted Biography "I am an attorney and a liberal Democrat. While I have held several positions within the legal field, I have dedicated the bulk of my career to public service. I was a public defender for over a decade, protecting the rights of the accused, pushing for criminal justice reform and access to mental health services for those who came before the court. Following the pandemic, I worked for the City of Detroit as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the Dept. of Aapeals and Hearings (DAH) and currently, I work for the City of Detroit Law Dept, as a Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel - TASS Attorney where I work in blight litigation. I am a progressive Democrat running for Congress to fight fascism, protect our freedom and democracy, and to address the issues that matter to the people in my district."
