November 5 general election

See also: Sheriff election in Miami-Dade County, Florida (2024)

Ballotpedia identified the November 5, 2024, general election for Miami-Dade County Sheriff as a battleground race. The summary below is from our coverage of this election, found here.

Rosie Cordero-Stutz (R) defeated James Reyes (D) in the general election for Miami-Dade County Sheriff on November 5, 2024. Click here for detailed results.

The election was the first time Miami-Dade County elected a sheriff since 1966, when county voters passed a referendum to abolish the position following allegations of corruption.[1] After the referendum, the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) managed county law enforcement.[2] The county mayor appointed the MDPD director.[2]

In 2018, Florida voters passed Amendment 10, which required every county in the state to have an elected sheriff. Miami-Dade County was the only county without a sheriff in 2018, and the amendment required the county to hold an election for the position in 2024.[1] As part of the amendment, the county will hold sheriff elections every four years.[3]

Cordero-Stutz was the assistant director of investigative services in the Miami-Dade Police Department at the time of the election.[4] She had served in the department for more than 28 years.[4] Cordero-Stutz campaigned on her experience in the MDPD. She said she had "extensive knowledge of our community’s law enforcement needs and best practices."[5] Cordero-Stutz said she was "committed to strengthening partnerships between law enforcement and community organizations" and that interaction would address local issues.[6] She said she would "establish stringent oversight mechanisms, transparent processes and a zero-tolerance policy against public corruption" and create accountability within the sheriff’s office.[6] She said she would focus on funding equipment and training for law enforcement. She said, "Funding is essential for maintaining public safety [and] enabling officers to perform their duties with the highest standards."[6]

Reyes was the chief of public safety for Miami-Dade County at the time of the election, a position he was appointed to in 2023.[7] He served in the Broward County Sheriff's Office for 22 years.[8] Reyes campaigned on his law enforcement experience in Broward County. He said he was the "only candidate in the race with executive leadership experience in a Sheriff’s office."[9] He said he would focus on cooperation between government agencies and the sheriff's office if elected, and he highlighted his time overseeing the departments of police, fire rescue, and corrections as Miami-Dade's chief of public safety.[9] Reyes said he would establish a public corruption unit that would "focus on combating corruption across Miami-Dade and maintaining high levels of trust in government."[9] Reyes said, "Trust is crucial to maintaining the integrity of law enforcement" and that he would prioritize community engagement and creating connections with the sheriff's office.[9]

Based on campaign finance reports, Cordero-Stutz raised $283,177 and Reyes raised $205,716.[10]

Ballotpedia covered the Republican primary for Miami-Dade County sheriff as a battleground election.
