In the 50 states, there are 99 state legislative chambers altogether, and 86 of the 99 state legislative chambers will hold elections on November 8, 2016.

A total of 1,210 (61.4%) of the country's 1,972 state senate seats and 4,710 (87.0%) of the country's 5,411 state house seats are up for a vote. Altogether, 5,920 (80.2%) of the country's 7,383 state legislative seats are up for election during the presidential election year.
- 42 of the 50 state senates are holding elections.
- 44 of the 49 state houses are holding elections.
Contributions in 2014
Contributions reports indicate that just over 1 billion dollars were raised towards 13,000 candidates for state legislative elections in 2014. There is a tremendous amount of variance between states. Many candidates in the 400-member New Hampshire State House don't raise any funds for campaigning, leading to an average of just $68 raised by candidates in that chamber. In contrast, candidates for Illinois State Senate raised $588,233 on average.[1]

The map below shows the average contributions to 2014 candidates for state senates. The average contributions raised by state senate candidates in 2014 was $148,144.[1] The state senate chambers with average contributions at both extremes were:
