Suja Lowenthal is a former member of the Long Beach City Council in California, representing District 2 from 2006 to 2016. Lowenthal served as the vice-mayor of Long Beach from 2010 to 2012. The Long Beach City Council reelected her to the position on July 15, 2014, in a 5-4 vote.[1][2]

Lowenthal was previously a board member of the Long Beach Unified School District from 2001-2006.[1]

In 2014, Lowenthal was a Democratic candidate for District 70 of the California State Assembly.

Lowenthal was born in Madras, India. She holds a B.S. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, an MBA from California State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. Her professional experience includes working for the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, the Central Basin Municipal Water District, the West Basin Municipal Water District and the Water Replenishment District of Southern California. She has also worked as an adjunct professor of geological sciences at the University of California, Long Beach.[1]

Elections for the California State Assembly took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7, 2014. Patrick O'Donnell (D) and John C. Goya (R) defeated Suja Lowenthal (D) in the blanket primary. O'Donnell defeated Goya in the general election.[3][4][5]
