Charles Pia Jr. was the Republican candidate in the special election for the Connecticut House of Representatives, District 64. Pia was running to fill the vacancy created when Carlo Leone (D) won election to the Connecticut State Senate, District 27 in a February 22 special election.

Biography

After graduating from the University of Connecticut in 2001, Pia started a project management company which went out of business as a result of the recession. Pia is the Director of Operations for his family's business, Charles and Charles Remodeling and Renovations.[1][2]

Campaign themes

2011

Pia's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

  • "Connecticut is facing a deficit in excess of 3.5 Billion this year alone and we need someone in Hartford who is ready to make the tough choices to bring stability, responsibility and common sense back to the State Government. The Governor's planned tax increases are a direct attack on Stamford residents and the those especially in the 148th District that my family has served for a half century. The majority of these residents are hardworking, middle class families, small business owners and seniors who have lived here most of their lives. I OPPOSE TAX INCREASES, I will work AGAINST proposing tax increases and most importantly I will vote AGAINST tax increases. Government has grown too much, and just as many Stamford residents have had to cut spending and watch their money, the government needs to as well. We cannot spend more than we bring in, we cannot borrow more than we can afford to pay back....Common Sense"[4]

Pia was defeated by Dan Fox (D) in the April 12, 2011 special election. John Mallozi (D), Monique Thomas (I), and Rolf Maurer (G) also ran for the seat.[1][5]
