I'm a true product of the 97th District, born/raised/educated/two careers to include my entire lifetime. I'm married to Kortney Peppler and have two wonderful grown children, Nolan and Paige.

I have worked in two Career paths which gives me a unique perspective toward working advocating for those who either cannot advocate for themselves or need an intercedent with the State of Michigan. I have worked directly with high level positions within Michigan's government to create/change/upgrade policies related to Human Services, Education and Criminal Justice.

I was raised in a large family who farmed and lived on a teacher's salary. My parents raised us in a conservative Christian household, taught all of us to respect others and work hard for what you deserve. My parents exposed us children to Foster Care before any of us knew what that meant by taking in two cousins as their own children.

I feel strongly in respecting the rights of others, advocating for those who are restricted or otherwise struggle to advocate for themselves. I'm a kind, fair, disciplined person with a great sense of humor. I respect others for who they are and show dignity to others as I would like to be treated.

I feel strongly we need to support of women and keep the government from deciding what women can or cannot do with their own bodies.
  • I believe our Country comes first and believe there isn't one person who comes before anyone else. I believe most Michiganders agree on most subject matters and need solid leaders to help guide the path of sensible, meaningful direction and decisions
  • I believe we all have our moral, religious or family backgrounds that lead us as we make our way through life. As such, I believe there must be limited government, respect of all humans, being kind to those we don't know, keeping an open mind when learning about other cultures/backgrounds.
  • We must preserve voting rights in Michigan. Our civil rights leaders fought in some cases gave their life for us today to have free, easy access to voting poles. I intend to do everything in my power to preserve those voting rights.
Human Services. I worked in the Human Services field (Child Welfare) for 30 years in many capacities. I've learned how we treat our children (in the form of prenatal, post natal, early education, health, continuing education, criminal justice and foster care) will set the tone and guide how our communities survive and thrive. I've noticed the failed and positive policies from our previous governmental leaders....democrat and republican and have a unique perspective when it comes to treating/guiding our young people. As a legislature, I will bring child welfare to the forefront and keep it there. We must care for our future beginning with our precious children.
There are so many who helped shape me into the man I am today....My father of course (I well up with tears as I write this thinking of all the hard work he performed for his family, he has since passed on), brothers/sisters, pastor, teachers, friends...the list goes on. As I grew to be the person I am today I read books by John Lewis, a great Civil Rights leader who made it his life passion to advocate for himself, others and those who weren't even born yet to assure we all share the same opportunities even though we may differ in direction, politics, religion, race, orientation, etc. He took those values and work ethic to Washington to become one our great politicians who never forgot where he came from and continued to advocate for others even to his death.
Transparency and honesty. I've worked with several Legislatures over the last couple of decades who were truly dedicated to their constituency and population of Michigan. A reoccurring value I noticed from the most successful legislatures were their willingness to be open, honest and available.
I bring a unique background in Child Welfare and Law Enforcement to the table. I was raised in a large family who worked very hard to assure we all had something to eat, a place at the table and Christian education. I've always possessed the ability to make friends with an eclectic group of people.....people who look, act, serve, worship, educate then me. I've been able to connect with others where sometimes it isn't always possible.
I was diagnosed with Spinal Meningtis at a very young age(4) but have clear memories of recovering at the hospital. I was expected to pass away from this devastating illness and my family were positioned to say their goodbyes. Ultimately I recovered and use that as a motivation in my life/direction as I was meant to be on this earth for a reason and I must use that reason for a good cause. I also remember as a youngster being exposed to many cultural/races different then mine. It was instrumental to guiding my path toward inclusiveness, kindness, understanding, empathy, and the desire to learn about others different then me.
Aside from many jobs as a young person (working on the farm, paperboy, stocking groceries) my first career minded job is as a Police Officer. I'm still certified as a Police Officer in Michigan and have been for over 31 years. Around the same time I started work as a counselor at a Child Welfare agency where I just recently retired from this summer. I retired after 30 years as a Vice President of Residential Programs in Vassar, Saginaw and Detroit.
Across that Bridge and Walking with the Wind both by John Lewis.

My wife Kortney and I read his books and decided to visit some of the locations in the book so we could get a close up view of his experiences. Kortney read passages and chapters as we visited different states. We followed the Freedom Rides through several states, we visited so many churches, museums and houses along the way. We crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge and reflected on the momentous moment when John Lewis, MLK and many others experienced. We visited Nashville, Birmingham, Atlanta, Selma, Greensboro (Walgreens lunch counter) and ended our trip in Montgomery Alabama. We worshiped in the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church before we returned to Michigan. We were blessed to sit near congregants who worshiped in the 60's at that very church where Martin Luther King Junior preached to them. It was an amazing experience which
Rocking in the Free World......Neil Young
A Governor should lead the State of Michigan and set a guide path for Legislatures to work with our brothers and sisters from both parties to accomplish the best case scenario for Michiganders.
Recovering from a global pandemic which led to crippling fuel prices, economy, educational delays, employment issues and negative political discourse. We will feel the effect of this pandemic for years to come and must compromise as State leaders to solve our most difficult enemies in the form of politicizing events such our environmental changes that must be dealt with immediately....especially since Michigan enjoys fresh water in a fashion not many others do in entire planet.
advantages include it's easier to maintain since there is only one chamber to operate, cheaper to operate, less rivalry, faster process of making laws

drawbacks include doesn't make room for equal representation in large areas, less of a check and balance system, not much debate between parties
I think State Legislatures bring eclectic backgrounds and experiences to the job that long history in previously held positions within government or politics is not necessary. I believe our differences add to potential for growth as well as willingness to work together so we may advocate for others.
I believe strongly we must build relationships with not only other legislators but also our constituency, other state leaders, and the federal government.
How the government works, how the "people" have a say in how their policies/programs/rules/regulations effect our daily lives.
I have not ruled out serving my community, district and state in different levels in the future.
Very PG:

How do you catch a unique rabbit? Unique up on it.......How do you catch a tame rabbit?.......tame way.
absolutely. I've learned in my experience as a Police Officer and Social Worker there must be compromise to accomplish what both sides are looking for....a reasonable answer to our problems. Needless to say, not one idea or program is the end all to be all, we must look to our partners for different views/values to make an educated brilliant decision to help all stakeholders.
