Campaign themes

2016

Mattive's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • Water: I believe that Southern Colorado’s House District 62 should be represented by someone with 'Skin in the Game' so to speak, someone who makes their living from the land, growing food, feed and fiber. I am that someone. As a farmer and as your Representative I will not compromise when it comes to keeping our water on our land, and on our farms. The Doctrine of Prior Appropriation is the governing water law in Colorado. A water right is a property right and is treated just like real property that can be bought, sold, traded or given away. The United States Constitution prohibits the taking of private property without due process and the Colorado Constitution prohibits the taking of a water right without just compensation paid to the owner.
  • Agriculture: I have been told that we need more farmers in the legislature. Well, I am proud to be a farmer from the San Luis Valley and yes, I want to serve you in the Colorado House of Representatives. Contrary to popular belief our food does not originate at the grocery store shelf. Educating people about where their food comes from has been important to me for as long as I can remember. As farmers and ranchers we must never stop educating the public on where their food comes from and what it takes to produce it and why it is important to retain its production here in Southern Colorado, and in the United States.
  • Economy: I have always believed that a strong healthy economy will generate more revenue than increasing taxes. However, if we want our communities to remain competitive and vibrant we need to look at tools that will help us compete. I would support a sales tax on internet purchases. The internet is a great tool, but it is siphoning too much money out of our rural economies. We need those sales staying in our local businesses to help them remain competitive, those jobs staying local and those dollars coming back to our cities and counties. We must look for ways to strengthen our rural communities, attract smart growth industries and create jobs. I will support smart economic development and businesses.
  • Veterans: My dad was a WWII veteran, my father-in-law is a Korea veteran, I have a niece and nephews who have served and are currently serving in the military. I have great respect for and am proud of those who choose to serve our country so bravely and honorably. We owe them not only a “thank you” for their service but we must be there supporting them in their time of need. I will support the needs of our veterans. [1]
