Campaign website

Albers’s campaign website stated the following:

As your State Board of Education member, Sheila will:

Prioritize hiring and retaining high-quality teachers

The teaching shortage is a national crisis and we must tackle this emergency head on. Having a high quality teacher is a huge determinant of student success. It is imperative that we find innovative ways to recruit people to the teaching profession and provide exemplary training to support all teachers throughout their careers.

Identify and promote best practices related to school safety

Our children must feel safe at school. Schools must identify and implement physical changes to keep doors secure and ways to effectively monitor who enters and exits the building. This needs to be balanced with the psychological needs of students to feel school is a warm and inviting place to learn.

Support an inclusive and welcoming climate for all students

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and diverse experiences. We should celebrate their uniqueness, foster a strong sense of self, and help them develop the skills to collaborate with others. Students who feel good about themselves will grow to be confident, happy, and productive members of society.

Increase access to mental healthcare for students

School districts throughout Kansas have found creative and powerful ways to support student’s mental health needs. Partnering with the medical community to bring social workers and counselors into buildings and/or training current staff in trauma-informed care are all effective ways to serve students and families. This work should continue and be expanded so that our children are supported both academically and emotionally.

Expand early childhood and post-secondary education opportunities

Education is not just a K-12 experience. Early childhood programs and Parents As Teachers provide a crucial foundation for our youngest learners. This is also true for many of our high school students who are benefiting from experiences at local community colleges. These opportunities will be crucial in finding meaningful career paths.

Build strong relationships and open communication between school and home

Parents play a significant role in the education of their children. Children benefit when parents are aware and involved in their children’s education. It is important that we continue to cultivate online portals that give parents the opportunity to see what is being taught. Parents should be encouraged to serve on district curriculum committees and volunteer in schools.[1]
