Nitza I. Quinones Alejandro is a judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She joined the court in 2013 after a nomination from Barack Obama. At the time of nomination, she was a judge on the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Alejandro earned her B.B.A from the University of Puerto Rico, graduating cum laude in 1972. She went on to earn her J.D. three years later from the University of Puerto Rico School for Law.[4]

Alejandro was nominated on November 27, 2012 by Barack Obama to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania vacated by Barclay Surrick.[2] Obama commented on the nomination:
“ | These men and women have had distinguished legal careers and I am honored to ask them to continue their work as judges on the federal bench. They will serve the American people with integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice.[4][5] | ” |
Alejandro was rated Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified by the American Bar Association. She had hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 13, 2013. You can find her Committee Questionnaire available here and her Questions for the Record available here.[6]
On June 13, 2013, the United States Senate confirmed Nitza I. Quinones Alejandro to an Article III post for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania with a voice vote.[7][8]
2011 election
Quinones Alejandro was retained with a "yes" vote of 73.3%.[9]
