Sean Casten defeated Marie Newman and Charles Hughes in the Democratic primary for Illinois' 6th Congressional District on June 28, 2022. At the time of the primary, Casten and Newman were members of the U.S. House of Representatives running for re-election in the same district due to redistricting. They led in fundraising and media attention. [1]
Newman represented Illinois' 3rd Congressional District. Casten was the incumbent in the redrawn 6th district. According to Chicago-based political consultant Frank Calabrese, 41% of the constituents in the new district were from Newman’s district, and 23% were from Casten’s.[2]
Both Casten and Newman cited climate change as a top issue.[3][4] Casten, a member of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis and the co-founder of an energy recycling company, said he supported market-based climate change legislation.[5] Casten introduced several climate-related bills, including the End Oil and Gas Tax Subsidies Act.[5][4] Newman sponsored the America’s Clean Future Fund Act, which proposed applying a carbon fee on the use of certain fuels and using the proceeds to fund other energy initiatives.[4][6] Newman criticized Casten for not supporting the Green New Deal. Casten said the Green New Deal "understands the urgency and doesn’t understand the complexity [of the problem]."[7][8]
The League of Conservation Voters and Clean Energy for America endorsed Casten. The Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition endorsed both Casten and Newman.[9][10]
Both incumbents also focused on abortion.[11][12] Newman spoke about her experience getting an abortion when she was 19 years old, saying, "It was not a shameful act. No woman should feel guilty for making a decision over her body, no matter the circumstances."[13] Newman criticized Casten for voting for George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole, Republicans she called anti-choice.[14]
Casten said his voting record was 100% pro-choice. In a campaign ad, Casten said, "Women have a fundamental right to make their own decisions, especially when it comes to abortion." Casten added, "I fought against defunding Planned Parenthood. I always have and always will oppose any measure, any attempt, to diminish or take away your rights."[11]
Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) endorsed both Casten and Newman.[9][10]
Casten criticized Newman for not disclosing the details of a settlement between her and a man who said Newman offered him a job in exchange for him not to run against her in the 2020 Democratic primary.[15] Newman called the allegations a distraction and said Casten should address an FEC complaint alleging that his campaign coordinated with a Super PAC during the 2018 Democratic primary.[16]
Newman was first elected in 2020, when she defeated incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski (D) in the Democratic primary. Newman won the general election 56.4% to 43.6%.
Casten was first elected in 2018 after defeating six-term incumbent Rep. Peter Roskam (R) 53.6% to 46.4%. Casten’s win was the first time a Democrat won in the 6th district since 1972.[17] Casten was re-elected in 2020 52.8% to 45.4%.
At the time of the primary, two election forecasters rated the general election as Likely Democratic, while one rated it Lean Democratic, meaning the primary winner would likely have an edge in the general election.
Eight U.S. House races had two incumbents running for the same congressional district in the 2022 elections. To learn more about U.S. House elections in 2022 with multiple incumbents, click here.

General election race ratings
- See also: Race rating definitions and methods
Ballotpedia provides race ratings from four outlets: The Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, Sabato's Crystal Ball, and DDHQ/The Hill. Each race rating indicates if one party is perceived to have an advantage in the race and, if so, the degree of advantage:
- Safe and Solid ratings indicate that one party has a clear edge and the race is not competitive.
- Likely ratings indicate that one party has a clear edge, but an upset is possible.
- Lean ratings indicate that one party has a small edge, but the race is competitive.[18]
- Toss-up ratings indicate that neither party has an advantage.
Race ratings are informed by a number of factors, including polling, candidate quality, and election result history in the race's district or state.[19][20][21]

Post-filing deadline analysis
The following analysis covers all U.S. House districts up for election in Illinois in 2022. Information below was calculated on June 13, 2022, and may differ from information shown in the table above due to candidate replacements and withdrawals after that time.
Ninety-five candidates filed to run for Illinois' 17 U.S. House districts, including 47 Democrats and 48 Republicans. That's 5.59 candidates per district, more than the 4.05 candidates per district in 2020 and the 4.39 in 2018.
This was the first election to take place under new district lines following the 2020 census, which resulted in Illinois losing one U.S. House district. The 95 candidates who filed to run in 2022 were the most candidates running for Illinois' U.S. House seats since at least 2014, the earliest year for which we have data.
The 2022 elections featured two districts where two incumbents ran against each other. Rep. Marie Newman (D), who represented the 3rd district, ran against incumbent Rep. Sean Casten (D) in the 6th district, and Rep. Rodney Davis (R), who represented the 13th district, ran against incumbent Rep. Mary Miller (R) in the 15th district. Four seats, including Newman's 3rd and Davis' 13th, were open, the most since at least 2014. Rep. Bobby Rush (D), who represented the 1st district, and Rep. Cheri Bustos (D), who represented the 17th district, decided to retire.
Twenty-one candidates filed to run in the 1st district to replace Rush, the most candidates who ran for a seat this year. There were 19 contested primaries, the fewest since 2016, when there were 14 contested primaries. Eight of the contested primaries were Democratic, and 11 were Republican. Eight incumbents — one Republican and seven Democrats — did not face any primary challengers.
The 7th district was guaranteed to Democrats because no Republicans filed, and the 16th district was guaranteed to Republicans because no Democrats filed.
Presidential elections
Partisan Voter Index
Heading into the 2022 elections, based on results from the 2020 and 2016 presidential elections, the Cook Partisan Voter Index for this district was D+3. This meant that in those two presidential elections, this district's results were 3 percentage points more Democratic than the national average. This made Illinois' 6th the 182nd most Democratic district nationally.[29]
2020 presidential election results
