For generations, young people have always made a difference in our country. Whether that be for social or cultural change, they have used the freedoms given to them to make the world a better place. I believe our current generation can do the same for politics. That we can bridge the gap that has made the current political landscape so toxic. Which is why, at the age of eighteen years old, I, Zach Hurwitz, am officially announcing my campaign for Rhode Island Governor. I hope to tackle tough subjects such as food insecurity, the loss of small businesses within our state, the opioid epidemic, tourism, and infrastructure. If elected, I hope to change Rhode Island for the better, to make this state an even more beautiful place to live.
  • By running for Rhode Island Governor, Zach plans to prove that his generation can get into politics, to make and decides policies that would impact their future and decades to come. To inspire younger generations to be more active in their community and politics in general.
  • In such a beautiful and developed state such as Rhode Island, it is a horrible thing to see that over 30% of Rhode Islanders are food insecure. Zach Hurwitz will do everything he can do to work across party lines, work with private charities, and everything in between to help ensure that no parents will ever have to lay awake at night, wondering how they’re going to feed their child in the morning. No student going to school hungry on an empty stomach.
  • Majority of Rhode Island kids are in public school, unfortunately, many of these school don’t provide proper access to mental health resources for both students AND teachers. This needs to change. Zach will work directly with the school administrations to put in place resources to help students and teachers, to make sure students can learn to the best of their ability, and teachers can teach to the best of their ability.
Improving quality of life for as many Rhode Islanders as I can, to have people be proud to live in such a beautiful state, and to make it more beautiful than ever. Where that’s working with private charities such as Save The Bay to clean up our beaches and waters, or by improving how many small businesses are created in this state, there are many ways to improve Rhode Island, and make it better than ever.

Campaign website

Hurwitz’s campaign website stated the following:

What I Stand For

The divide in our state between parties has grown to unprecedented proportions. We can see this in our schools, in our workplaces, and in our government. My hope is that as an Independent, I can work across party lines and bring more unity to our great state. I may be the youngest candidate running for office, but I believe that my youth can bring vitality to our government, to help make this state as beautiful as ever.

MISSION STATEMENT

We Need to do Better.

Imagine for a second, you're in the third grade. You had a great time at school learning and playing with friends, and now it's time to come home. You take that classic yellow school bus down your street and have it drop you off near your house or apartment. As you walk your stomach rumbles, yearning for food. You open the door and rush to the kitchen, opening the cabinets and the fridge door, to find something to eat. You find nothing. While hunger may not seem like a difficult problem to solve in a state like ours, it is a big problem for almost 30,000 children. Overall, one out of every eleventh person in Rhode Island faces food insecurities every day. That is unacceptable. We need to do better. If elected, I promise to do everything I can to make sure that no child goes hungry, and that parents don't have to lay awake at night wondering how they are going to feed their sons and daughters. That is my promise to the Rhode Island people.[1]
