I am a lifelong resident of Lakeland who has a 'fix it' attitude as it relates to policies that can benefit everyone in the district. I am the proud son of a nurse and warehouse worker, who aims to take the values of resilience, compassion, and common ground that I grew up with. As a result of being born premature, I have cerebral palsy and am a wheelchair user (my very own Toyota Corolla). I have a master's degree in Education Policy and Leadership, as I have always enjoyed knowing how education systems work and can be improved. I come as a candidate hoping to bring the lived experience of having a disability to the policymaking table; however, I have much more to bring than doing donuts with my wheelchair. I will be blunt in stating that I have not been as involved in the community as I should be. So, why vote for a person who is different and unknown? Because I will try my hardest to listen to all opinions, and am not afraid to stand on principles I hold dear. My main goal: create positive change during my term that provides residents with relief amidst multiple crises.
  • My first key message is one of the golden rules of life: treat issues with dignity and humanize policy. I will always try my hardest to listen first and talk last. This may be on a wide range of issues, and if there are times I do not know, I will learn from you.
  • My second key message is in relation to the status quo of politics. The state Republican party has held that status quo over the past 25 years. In looking at the housing markets, affordability, and complex issues that have not been addressed, I aim to put those to the forefront. If representatives choose not to address your issues, they are not satisfying the role you gave them in trust. Of course, I would expect nothing less as your representative.
  • I present my third key message in terms of a question: who do we want to be? The election will be the 250th year of the founding of our home. In looking through the sands of time, we have always proceeded forward where individual capacity is unmatched compared to anywhere in the world. In the State of Florida, progress has been stagnant for far too long. My message to you: It is only in looking at the ties that bond us together do we move forward. As such, I will aim to bring concrete policy "wins" for the people rather than the powerful.
The areas of public policy that I am passionate about are education, disability rights, housing markets, and taxation. In terms of the desire not to raise taxes, I understand the desire for there to be no increase in taxes; however, taxation in that argument is based on the individual and not corporations. I believe that corporations in the state should have a social contract with residents to provide for our well-being. There are many challenges in education that must be addressed, including how students are not prepared for college and/or the workforce. Lastly, more services should be provided to allow for the independence of people with disabilities.
The core responsibilities are to listen to constituents' needs and concerns, formulate potential solutions, and bring forth policies that will benefit the well-being of the district.
My mom would say being gullible, and I would say being hardheaded. It has especially crept up on me as I have grown older, though it may be due to my lack of independence in other areas.
The state's greatest challenges over the next decade will be the housing market, artificial intelligence, and emergency management infrastructure.
The first bill I would introduce if elected would be to create a pilot program to modernize high school graduation requirements and move away from high-stakes testing.
Budget Committee; Education & Employment Committee; State Affairs Committee
Financial transparency and government accountability are essential to ensure that constituents understand what the government is doing and who is being impacted. I would add one dimension in that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the information is understood.
I strongly oppose the changes implemented this past term to stifle the voice of the people through the ballot initiative process. One change I would support is to potentially pilot an electronic process that would save paperwork.
