Noteworthy events
Arrest for alleged child abuse (2018)
On December 10, 2018, Fresno police arrested Arambula for alleged child abuse. Arambula was cited with misdemeanor willful cruelty to a child and released.[2] The Fresno Police Department said the accusation came from a Child Protective Services employee calling from Dailey Elementary Charter School. The employee said a child had been injured.[3]
On December 11, Arambula, sitting with his wife, said he spanked his seven-year-old daughter on the buttocks as a way to discipline her. "I disciplined her as a consequence to something she did. This is something that's really rare for us. This is not—it's a tool of last resort," he said in an interview. Arambula said Child Protective Services had decided to allow his daughters, aged 3, 6, and 7, to return to his home.[3]
On March 12, 2019, the Fresno County District Attorney’s office charged Arambula with one count of cruelty to a child by inflicting physical pain or mental suffering. Through his attorney, Margarita Martinez-Baly, Arambula said, "The allegation that I may have harmed one of my daughters is false and unthinkable. While politics may have influenced the decision to file, we are confident that our judicial system will find this allegation to be false."[4]
Arambula took a voluntary leave of absence from the legislature following the district attorney's decision to file charges.[5]
In May 2019, a jury found Arambula not-guilty of child abuse. He returned to the legislature on May 20, 2019.[6]

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
