California state legislative special elections, 2014
In 2014, two seats were vacated and filled by special elections in the California State Legislature. The following district had a vacancy in 2014:
- State Senate District 23: The seat was vacant following William Emmerson's (R) resignation on December 1, 2013, when he stated his passion for the position had waned.
- State Senate District 35: The seat is vacant following Roderick Wright's (D) resignation on September 22, 2014, following his conviction in a perjury and voting fraud case..
How vacancies are filled
If there is a vacancy in the California State Legislature, the governor must call for a special election. The governor must call the election within 14 calendar days of the vacancy. No special election shall be held if the vacancy occurs after the nominating deadline has passed in the final year of the term of office.[1]

Mike Morrell (R) defeated Ameenah Fuller (D), Ronald J. O'Donnell (D), Crystal Ruiz (R) and Jeff Hewitt (L) in the special election, which took place on March 25.[2][3] The seat was vacant following William Emmerson's (R) resignation on December 1, 2013, when he stated his passion for the position had waned.[4] A special election for the position of California State Senate District 23 was called for March 25, with a runoff if necessary on June 3. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was January 31.[5]

Isadore Hall, III (D) defeated Louis L. Dominguez (D), Hector Serrano (D) and James Spencer (R) in the special election on December 9, 2014.[6][3] The seat was vacant following Roderick Wright's (D) resignation on September 22, 2014, after he was convicted in a perjury and voting fraud case.[7] A special election for the position of California State Senate District 35 was called for December 9, with a runoff on February 10, 2015, if necessary. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was October 17, 2014.[8]
