March 5 judicial elections

Contested elections were held for two seats on the Superior Court of San Francisco County on March 5, 2024. Incumbent Michael Begert defeated challenger Chip Zecher and incumbent Patrick Thompson defeated challenger Jean Myungjin Roland.

Stop Crime Action endorsed both challengers.[1] The group was an affiliate of Stop Crime SF, whose mission it said was "preventing crime in San Francisco neighborhoods and giving victims a voice."[2] The group gave the judges failing grades in its scorecard for the 2024 elections.[3] The Bar Association of San Francisco rated both incumbents well-qualified but did not rate either challenger.[4][5]

Stop Crime SF said both incumbents had "a demonstrated track record of releasing serious and dangerous offenders back into the public."[1] According to the San Francisco Standard, the incumbents' supporters said the challenges were "a politically motivated effort to put fear into San Francisco judges so they are more harsh."[6] Neither incumbent had previously faced a challenger.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) appointed Begert to the bench in 2010. Begert presided, at the time of the election, over San Francisco's CARE Court. The court handles cases involving individuals with mental health disorders who are not charged with criminal offenses.[6] Begert earlier worked as an attorney in private practice.[7] Begert's endorsements included the San Francisco Democratic Party and the San Francisco Chronicle.[8]

Zecher was, at the time of the election, a practicing attorney and the vice chairman of the board of directors of the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco.[9] Zecher said he was running because his service on the board made him aware of how serious crime was in many parts of San Francisco.[6] Zecher's endorsements included the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs' Association and the San Francisco Police Officers Association.[10]

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) appointed Thompson to the bench in 2022. Thompson oversaw, at the time of the election, preliminary hearings that determine whether a case should go to trial and if pre-trial conditions should be levied on the defendant. Before his appointment, Thompson worked as an attorney in corporate practice.[11] Thompson's endorsers included the San Francisco Democratic Party and the San Francisco Chronicle.[12][13]

Roland was, at the time of the election, a prosecutor in the San Francisco District Attorney's office, which she joined in 2001. Roland said her commitment to working in criminal justice stemmed from a home invasion targeting her grandparents.[14] Roland's endorsers included the San Francisco Police Officers Association and the San Francisco Deputy Sheriff's Association.[15]
