Pethal submitted the following answer to the question, "What is your political philosophy?" through Ballotpedia’s biographical information submission form:

The status quo is failing and we need new faces, with new ideas and new passion for governance from the younger generations to step up. I hope to represent the interests of the people of District 99 and I will completely leave personal benefit out of the equation. There are too many hypocritical politicians already, those who run for office for personal gain. I can't stand that! We need new fire, not the same same. I am also an economics nerd and I don't think people are prepared for the economic changes coming to our District 99, our state of NC and our country, as a whole. I fully understand the changes underway and I am prepared far, far better than my opponents to address the challenges that will lie ahead of us all.

I am campaigning the old fashioned way by going door-to-door. I believe that the political class has become entirely too disconnected from the people they represent. I want to repair that disconnect and begin to restore faith in our political governance systems. I hear every day how tired people are of status quo and how ridiculous our politics has become. I agree and want to fix that. More of the status quo will not work going forward and the voters know it. I am offering a choice to go in a different direction![1]

Candidate Connection

Jackson Pethtal participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 3, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jackson Pethtal's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Raising minimum wage

2) Equal pay for equal work
3) Medical Cannabis, a guaranteed, massive job and revenue creator across our entire state[3][1]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am a huge economics nerd and hope to put my knowledge to use to benefit the people of the 99th district.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[1]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jackson Pethtal answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to my grandfather Nash. He was a very successful and influential man while maintaining humility and kindness.[1]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
None comes to mind. Anything economic![1]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
TRUTHFULNESS. A big reason I am running is to bring back integrity to public service. There are way too many elected officials that run for office only to personally profit.[1]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I'm a great listener and after all it is the job of the Rep to represent the people, not to dictate to the people. I have a commanding presence and the ability to persuade others to see my point of view.[1]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To represent the interests of the people of the 99th district, not representing my own interests.[1]
What legacy would you like to leave?
That I was a officeholder with integrity.[1]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Not sure.[1]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Roofing in the dead middle of summer. Terrible job but I had to start somewhere.[1]
What happened on your most awkward date?
Nothing. And that's what made it awkward.[1]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
July 4th, when the spirit of freedom is celebrated.[1]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Great American Adventure. It is an explanation of the real history of America.[1]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
None.[1]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes, of course. Legislators must understand how a government operates and must understand personally where it can be improved.[1]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Budgetary[1]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Cooperative[1]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes because a good compromise is one where neither side is completely happy or completely angry. That only comes with interacting for the best result for the people.[1]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Appropriations, agriculture, economic, banking, finance, IT[1]
If you are not currently a member of your party's leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Yes.[1]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
Perhaps. I must win this office first and represent my district to the fullest of my abilities. Then will I consider higher office.[1]
