Judd J. Carhart was an associate justice on the Massachusetts Appeals Court, the intermediate appellate court for the state of Massachusetts. Governor Deval Patrick appointed Carhart in October 2010. The Massachusetts Governor's Council confirmed Carhart by a vote of six to one.[1] He joined the appeals court December 15. Carhart retired May 3, 2017.[2]

Education

Carhart earned his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts in 1971 and his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 1974.[2]

Career

Carhart began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in Norfolk County, serving in that position from 1974 to 1977 before joining the faculty at Suffolk University Law School. In 1978 he became an assistant United States attorney. Carhart was in private practice from 1982 to 1988, first with the law firm of Carhart, Bonistalli and McCarthy in Boston, and then with the firm of Matrord, DiMauro, Liebel, Fitzgerald and Carhart in Springfield. In 1988, he was appointed by Governor Michael Dukakis and then elected district attorney of the Northwestern District. In 1993, Governor William Weld appointed Carhart to the Massachusetts Superior Court. He serve as a superior court justice until his 2010 appointment to the Massachusetts Appeals Court. Carhart is a longtime adjunct professor in the legal studies department at the University of Massachusetts.[2]
