As of September 14, 2020, 40 states (and Washington, D.C.) had implemented online voter registration. Another state, Oklahoma, had passed legislation or enacted regulations authorizing online voter registration.[1]
Voter registration requirements and deadlines in 2020
The sections below detail voter registration requirements and deadlines in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five permanently inhabited U.S. territories for the November 3, 2020, general election.
Voter registration requirements
How to use this interactive table: The table comprises four columns:
- State
- Registration URL (a link to the state website where eligible voters can register, if applicable)
- Registration status URL (a link to the state website where voters can check their registration status, if applicable)
- Registration update URL (a link to the state website where voters can update their registrations, if applicable)
Each of the five columns can be sorted alphabetically or chronologically. To sort a column, click the column heading. To search for a state, enter the state name in the search bar above the upper right-hand corner of the table.
By default, the table displays 10 states at a time. To see additional states on subsequent pages, use the navigation prompts under the bottom right-hand corner of the table. To change the number of states displayed on a single page, use the drop-down menu above the upper left-hand corner of the table.
Voter registration deadlines
How to use this interactive table: The table comprises five columns:
- State
- In-person registration deadline (the last day a voter can register in person, if applicable)
- Mail registration deadline (the last day a voter can register by mail, if applicable)
- Mail postmark or receipt deadline (whether the mail registration deadline is a postmark or receipt deadline)
- Online registration deadlines (the last day a voter can register online, if applicable)

Same-day voter registration
How to use this interactive table: The table comprises three columns:
- State
- Same-day registration ("Yes" indicates that the state allows voters to register on Election Day)
- Early voting same-day registration ("Yes" indicates that the state allows voters to register during the early voting period, if applicable)
