Campaign themes
2014
Owens' website highlighted the following campaign themes:
“ | My Economic Vision for District 27B:
My Goals for Education:
Youth in the county face particular workforce challenges. With little experience or training to build off of, young workers are three times more likely to be unemployed than their adult counterparts. While this is a national trend, it is slightly more pronounced in Prince George’s County, indicating a need for programs and services targeting youth. Adults with low educational attainment also face high unemployment rates, and there is a clear need for adult education in the county. More than 60,000 county residents lack a high school credential, and an even greater number struggle with basic literacy skills. Adult education services are needed both for native citizens looking to get ahead in education and the workplace, and for the county’s growing foreign-born population. My Goals for Affordable Health Care and Social Services:
Millions of Americans with mental health or substance use disorders do not have adequate insurance protection against the costs of treatment for mental and substance use disorders. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) makes it easier for those Americans to get the care they need by prohibiting certain discriminatory practices that limit insurance coverage for behavioral health treatment and services. I will work to improve the lives of the residents of Prince George's and Calvert County and all Marylanders.[2][3] |
