Betsy Mills is a Republican running for the Indiana House of Representatives in District 54, which covers most of Henry and Rush Counties, as well as parts of Shelby and Hancock Counties.

Betsy was raised on her family’s 20-acre farm in northern Henry County by Sally Mills, who is now a local librarian, and Kenny Mills, who was a tool and die maker, the owner of a local gun dealership, and a proud Marine.

Currently, Betsy serves as an At-Large member of the Henry County Council, in which capacity she sits on the Henry County Economic Development Corporation Board and the Eastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (EDC). After many years as a 911 dispatcher, Betsy is also proud to support the Henry County Coroner’s office and all her friends in emergency services.

Betsy also serves as Vice-Chair of both the Henry County Republican Central Committee and the Federation of Indiana Young Republicans. She is a Constitutional conservative, who believes that governments should be small and budgets should be balanced.

A graduate of Ball State University (B.A. 2008, M.A. 2010), Betsy now works remotely as an Assistant Teaching Professor of communications for Penn State University.

Serving her community is Betsy’s passion, along with tending the garden on her family’s farm, spending time with her family and pets, and watching the Indianapolis Colts.

I am passionate about anything that personally impacts our district and region. To live in East Central Indiana and represent its citizens, an elected official must have an understanding of economic development, agriculture, education, and other important subjects.

My specialty in public policy would likely be in two areas: economic development, and education. I serve on both the Boards of the Henry County Economic Development and the Eastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (EIRPC) as our Henry Council liaison.

My full-time job is in education - I am an Assistant Teaching Professor for Penn State University. I work remotely, and teach communications.
My favorite person in politics is Condoleezza Rice. She's a fascinating and brilliant woman, and I admire the way she conducts herself and treats others.
Honesty, integrity, passion, knowledge, hard work. Being able to communicate and work with others.
I am extremely passionate about making our region - East Central Indiana - the best place for Hoosiers to start businesses, raise families, and to enjoy our lives. I am easily accessible to constituents, I care about the problems facing our region, and I work hard to find solutions to those issues. I am honest, analytical, and ready to work hard to be the legislator House District 54 deserves.

I see incredible economic potential in our region with the growth of Indianapolis on the I-70 and I-69 corridors. As the capital city continues to expand, we have great opportunity to further develop our region, grow our local economy, and thrive. I want to be a part of that legacy.
I remember the Persian Gulf War, which started in 1990. I would have been five years old. My parents had the TV on constantly, watching the news.
My very first job was detasseling corn in Straughn, Indiana in southeast Henry County. I would get up at 4 am every day, go to New Castle, and board a bus that would take me to the other end of the county. We would work from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. every day but Sunday. Some weeks, I would leave work to go straight to band camp at Shenandoah, where I would march with drums for hours into the night.

I detasseled corn for three summers - it was the hardest job I've ever had, and it's given me respect for manual labor and agriculture.
The Westing Game. I read it in 5th grade at Shenandoah Elementary School. It's a really well written mystery, and I loved the class activities we had with the book as we tried to solve the puzzle.
As a currently elected official (Henry County Council) who has worked on legislation at the state level for several years, I cannot fathom how anyone without political training and experience could go to the Statehouse and be an effective legislator right off the bat.

To me, the most successful legislators are those who have come through local government first and have had experience understanding government at its most local level.
It's absolutely crucial that legislators have good working relationships with other legislators. It's a legislator's job to pass meaningful legislation that improves our state - and that requires a majority vote and help from other legislators. To be able to team up with other legislators is absolutely vital in taking legislation over the finish line and written into law.
I would want to pick the committees that would have the most impact for House District 54. Knowing our region, this would be the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee.

I would also be interested in the Education Committee, given my background as an educator.

Given that I care deeply about government running efficiently and effectively, I would be interested in both the House Local Government Committee, as well as the Government and Regulatory Reform Committee.

Finally, given its power and importance - I would hope to one day serve on the Ways and Means Committee.
I hear from citizens every day that they are scared to death of current gas prices - who can afford to fill their tank at $4.40 a gallon? This is not sustainable. Inflation in general is hurting Hoosier families. Businesses can't find workers. Our state legislature needs to do everything it possibly can to protect Hoosier families and keep our economy running.
