Carole Taylor is a former judge of the Florida Fourth District Court of Appeal. She served on the court from 1998 to 2020. Taylor was appointed to the court by Governor Lawton Chiles.[1] She retired on March 31, 2020.[2]

Taylor was the first African-American woman appointed to the Fourth District Court of Appeal.[3]

Education

Taylor earned her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in 1971 and her J.D. from the University of North Carolina Law School in 1974.[1]

Career

Taylor began her legal career in 1974, working as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Durham County. In 1976, she became a staff attorney for New Hanover Legal Services. The following year, she became an Associate University Attorney for the University of Florida. She was an Assistant Public Defender from 1979 to 1982, and then an Assistant U.S. Attorney from 1982 to 1983. She joined the law firm Sams, Ward, Newman, Beckham & Elser, P.A. in 1983, worked there for a year, and then entered private practice. In 1991, she became a County Court judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida and in 1995, she was elevated to Circuit Court judge of the same judicial circuit. She held this position until her appointment to the Court of Appeal in 1998.[1]
